ST. LUCY

We tend not to celebrate the Saints all that much as a church. I think a major reason for that is because ‘that’s what the Catholics do, not us!’

Whilst it is important to recognise that no human being is more important than any other, I think that if we want to grow in spiritual maturity it is important to see past man-made denominational differences and see what God might teach us from different traditions.

This Tuesday is the feast day of St. Lucy. Lucy lived in the 4th Century as a Christian in a time of great persecution.

The day is widely celebrated in Scandinavia, where young girls give out biscuits and wear advent wreaths (complete with candles) on their heads. This is done to remember that Lucy used to go into caves to feed the Christian churches who were hiding from Roman persecution. To see in the dark caves and have her hands free to carry as much food as possible, she wore something resembling an advent wreath on her head.

I think this should genuinely inspire us, especially at Christmas.

At Christmas we should embrace the light of the world, Jesus Christ, but remember to keep our hands free to help as many people as possible!

We used our hands to light Christingles at St Luke’s a couple of Sunday’s ago, we used our hands to bake cookies for those attending the Tamborine Mountain carol service that same weekend. We use our hands to light candles at every church service. We use our hands to welcome others into church and to point them to Christ.

However, people like St Lucy remind us that we can also act individually and use our hands, even if it’s just to reach for our wallets and give charitably!

So, as you use your hands to prepare Christmas dinner this year, think: How else could you also be using them in 2023?

Tom

NOTICES…

Parish AGM #1 Sunday 18th December St George’s (after the 10am service)

This first part of the Parish AGM is to elect members of the 2023 Parish Council so they will be able to launch into the new year prepared. This is a very important part of Parish life so please prayerfully consider how you can be part of it. There will need to be 10 people present to form a quorum for the meeting. In the past this first part of the AGM has taken less than 30 minutes. Your attendance will be greatly appreciated. The second part of the AGM will take place on Sunday 19th February

Nomination forms are available on the entry table at both churches. Completed forms are to be handed to Tom or the Churchwardens by Sunday 11th December.

This week’s intercessions: Prepared by Peta

Isaiah foretells of the coming of Jesus in the form of a new born baby:

For unto us a child is born, to us a son is given;

Authority rests upon his shoulders,

and his name shall be called Wonderful, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Mighty God, we give you thanks for our marvellous earth and all its wonders and its resources which sustain us. We pray that all nations use these resources mindfully and equitably for the wellbeing of their peoples. We pray for an end to senseless destruction of the environment and habitat for greed. Mighty God, we need your help to influence decisions to protect the world we live in.

Mighty God, hear our prayer.

Everlasting Father, we thank you for the work of your church and of your love in our lives. We give thanks for the work of your servants Phillip, John and Tom, and for all who minister in your name. We pray for our new Locum priest Helen as she prepares to work amongst us in January.

Everlasting Father, hear our prayer.

Wonderful and loving God, we pray for all in the world and in our community who need our prayers and love. Comfort those who are suffering and in need, those in conflict zones and in refugee camps, and those whose governments are limiting their citizens’ freedoms and life choices. Inspire us who have so much, to help stop barbarity and cruelty wherever we can.

Wonderful and loving God, hear our prayer.

We pray especially for those in need around us, our neighbours, our friends and our families. We pray especially for … and for any known to us whom we name aloud or in the silence of our hearts…

Wonderful and loving God, hear our prayer.

Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace, we give thanks for your life, begun at this Christmas time so long ago. We give thanks for your life then given for us, and for the lives of all who have honoured you, who have gone before us. We remember with love all those whose year’s mind occurs at this time.

Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace, hear the humble prayers of your people, and grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
