Isaiah 61.1–2

Collect of the Day

Eternal God,

you sent John the Baptist

to prepare the way for the coming of your Son:

grant us wisdom to see your purpose

and openness to hear your will,

that we too may prepare the way for Christ

who is coming in power and glory

to establish his rule of peace and justice;

through Jesus Christ our Judge and our Redeemer,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Liturgy:  via PowerPoint + APBA   Colour – Purple

Readings:

Isaiah 61.1–4, 8–11; Song of Mary.

   1 Thessalonians 5.12–28; John 1.6–8, 19–28

We acknowledge and pay our respects to the Wanggeriburra people of the Yugambeh Nation, the traditional owners and ongoing custodians of the land on which we gather, and to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people worshipping with us today.

A note from Helen

On this Sunday of Joy, this Third Sunday of Advent, good news is coming.  The world is being transformed by God’s ‘impossible possibilities’.  God’s way is emerging in a troubled world.  God’s Spirit is upon all people and the vulnerable, the outcast, the lost, will experience healing and hospitality.  This is the message of the prophet Isaiah and our Advent hope.  Transformation may mean the death of one order and the birth of a new age.  That death of the familiar, may be painful.  The birth pangs which accompany the birth of a new age may also be painful.  This is the message of Mary’s hymn – the social order will be turned upside down so it can again be right side up.  Isaiah’s and Mary’s words remind us that justice-seeking can be messy and involve pain for some so that others may be uplifted.

This is the day that the Lord has made.....Let us rejoice and be glad in it.

As we enter a new Christian year, let us renew our wonder of the natural world which God has given us, and for all the living creatures which share God’s creation. Help us to preserve its beauty and resources for all who will be coming after us.

Lord, in your mercy.....Hear our prayer.

Let us thank God for the peace and prosperity in which we live here in Australia and we pray for all those who are suffering in places where there is conflict and civil strife. Particularly we pray for all who have lost so much in Gaza, the Ukraine, all who have lost family members, their homes and possessions and who have nowhere to call home except a tent in a refugee camp. We pray for all who are working to bring food, water, shelter and medical help for those suffering so much, and we pray that ways may be found to end these conflicts before too much more is lost.

Lord, in your mercy.....Hear our prayer.

We pray for Anglican churches throughout the world and their leaders as they seek ways to spread the Gospel in often difficult and confusing circumstances. We pray for our Archbishop elect Jeremy, our regional bishop John, and our priest Helen, and we pray for our new parish council which will be elected today. We pray for Anglicare and other voluntary organisations which bring relief and help to the homeless and others who are victims of domestic violence at home, unemployment, or unwanted separation from their families.

Lord, in your mercy.....Hear our prayer.

We thank God for our health and strength and pray for all who are suffering from long or short term medical conditions, and we remember all places of healing and treatment and for those who work there, either in hospitals, clinics or at home. We pray for all who care for the elderly and disabled in residential care and for all who give their time to help the carers. Particularly today we pray for..................

Lord, in your mercy.....Hear our prayer.

We give thanks for the lives of those whom we have known but are no longer with us, and today we remember....

Let us say this grace together: Go before us, O Lord, in all our doings with your most gracious favour, and assist us with your continual help, that in all works, begun, continued and ended in you, we may glorify your holy name, and finally by your mercy obtain everlasting life, through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen

Prayer for our new Archbishop..

Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers, Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
