We are a Christian faith community living in the way of Christ accepting and welcoming all in loving service, growing Christ’s future on Earth.

Sentence for the Day

Watch and be ready, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. Matthew 24.42, 44

Collect of the Day

Eternal God,

you have taught us that the night is far spent

and the day is at hand:

keep us awake and alert,

watching for your kingdom,

so that when Christ, the bridegroom, comes

we may go out joyfully to meet him,

and with him enter into the marriage feast

that you have prepared for all who truly love you;

through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Liturgy: via PowerPoint + APBA Colour – Green

Readings: Joshua 24.1–3a, 24.14–25; Psalm 78.1-7; 1 Thessalonians 4.9–18; Matthew 25.1–13

We acknowledge and pay our respects to the Wanggeriburra people of the Yugambeh Nation, the traditional owners and ongoing custodians of the land on which we gather, and to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people worshipping with us today.

A note from Helen The stories we tell are important. The stories Joshua and the Israelites exchange in our first reading are painful to hear and difficult to deal with. Joshua asks the Israelites to choose who they will follow, ‘the God of your ancestors or the gods of the Amorites in whose land we now live’. But their reason for choosing God is not easy to hear. So how do we deal with a God whose stories include drownings, curses, plagues, and genocidal conquests. And although we may not realise it, the stories we tell, and the gods we choose or reject, are powerfully linked. The Israelites had to choose between a God who turned a blind eye to violence and tribalism or a God who would call them to account when they oppressed the stranger, ignored the widow, mistreated the orphan. And our society today has its own life-or-death decision about God and neighbour. We are not autonomous to do whatever we want; the God of covenant will not quietly accept selfish anti-neighbour behaviour. So, our neighbour decision is an awareness that the ones unlike us deserve inclusion in the whole of community. Our stories matter. And even though God is in our stories, God will never be contained by our stories. As Christ’s followers, we are called to hold our stories reverently but lightly, let them exist in full and creative tension with each other. May we choose a God who is unimaginably bigger than the stories we tell, a God whose every story begins, and ends, in love.

2. How do we/you live in the way of Christ?

3. How do we/I communicate ‘living in the way of Christ’ in the wider community?

Intercessions – prepared by Peta

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.’

Heavenly Father, we give you thanks and honour for the beauty of the earth and for the earth’s bounty which sustains us. Help us to use these resources mindful of the needs of all people on this earth. Guide world leaders in making fair and ethical decisions about the future of our world. We pray for all nations and peoples suffering impacts of severe weather and climate change. We pray for relief from bushfire in our own country, and especially for those firefighters who lost their lives in the service of others.

Merciful God, hear our prayer.

We give you thanks and honour for your church across the world, for the world-wide Anglican Communion, for church leaders in this diocese and in this parish. Our prayers go with Rev John in his work in Africa. We give thanks for the commitment of Archbishop Elect, Jeremy and his assistant bishops.

Merciful God, hear our prayer.

We remember your commandment to love one another, and we pray for all those in need, and for support services, helping where we have the opportunity and resources. We pray for the seriously ill and dying, those without shelter, security, or dignity. In our community, we pray for school leavers, especially for Cy. We pray for those mourning the painful loss of loved ones, and especially for the family of our friend, Kaye.

Merciful God, hear our prayer.

Heavenly Father, we are blessed and honoured that you have promised a place with you for each of us when our time on earth comes to an end. We honour all who have lived their lives according to your will and have gone before us; we give thanks for the lives of all saints, martyrs, missionaries and Christian teachers.

Merciful God, hear our prayer.

Prayer for Archbishop-elect Jeremy – Rev’d Helen.

Merciful god, grant that what we have asked for in faith, we may by your grace, receive. Amen
