Sentence for the Day

The greatest among you will be your servant. All who exalt themselves will be humbled, and all who humble themselves will be exalted. Matthew 23.11–12

Collect of the Day

Creator God, you have filled the world with beauty: open our eyes to behold your gracious hand in all your works, that, rejoicing in your whole creation,

we may learn to serve you with gladness, for the sake of him through whom all things were made, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Collect for All Saints Day

Eternal God, neither death nor life can separate us from your love: grant that we may serve you faithfully here on earth, and in heaven rejoice with all your saints who ceaselessly proclaim your glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Liturgy:  via PowerPoint + APBA   Colour – Green

Readings:

Joshua 3.7–17; Psalm 107.1–7, 107.33–37; 1 Thessalonians 3.5–13; Matthew 23.1–12

We acknowledge and pay our respects to the Wanggeriburra people of the Yugambeh Nation, the traditional owners and ongoing custodians of the land on which we gather, and to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people worshipping with us today

A note from Helen

Moses parted the red sea by tapping it with his staff, under the instruction of God, and the Israelites escaped Egypt.  Joshua, Moses’ successor, also followed God’s instruction and, using the Ark of the Covenant, parted the Jordan River to move safely to their new land.  The difference in these two acts is the intent of God and the Israelites.  Under Moses’ leadership, the Israelites were liberated from captivity; when the Israelites crossed the Jordan, it was to achieve new lands at the expense of the people who lived in them.  No doubt, the Israelites believed God was on their side and the ‘enemy’ was of little consequence.  But this all begs the question – “does God really ‘take sides’”, and does God ‘cause’ or ‘inspire’ or even ‘condone’ such violence.  We do well to read these passages with caution and criticism.  We do well to consider the story for the ‘other side’s’ point of view.  We also do well to be cautious about assuming that God will always ‘see things from our point of view’ and not assume that, no matter what is happening, ‘we’ are the ones God will fight for.  Yes, we believe that God wants us all to flourish, and wants the world as a whole to flourish.  As we see in the Psalm, we do well to seek the well-being of all God’s beloved as abundant life is for all creation, not just ‘my’ immediate family.

NOTICES

Stewardship Thought

1. What does ‘living in the way of Christ’ mean for us/you?

2. How do we/you live in the way of Christ?

3. How do we/I communicate ‘living in the way of Christ’ in the wider community?

Intercessions – prepared by Barbara

Almighty God, Creator of the world we live in, perfectly tuned for all living things, humans, animals, birds and fish, flora and fauna of all kinds. We are sorry for wrong choices and actions we have made and damage done.  Guide us to change the way we live so all may flourish. We pray and give thanks for farmers and all who care for the land see and sky.

Ever present God hear our prayer.

Loving God, your son Jesus came to teach us how to live in the best possible way yet His peace illudes us and egos out of balance wanting control start wars. We are devastated by the fighting and destruction In Gaza and Israel. We pray for peace and help for people injured and those helping them in whatever way they can. We pray for peace wherever there is war in the world and all refugees affected by it. Guide leaders of the nations in their deliberations. Lead  them to good compromises so all may flourish.

Ever present God hear our prayer.

Loving God, churches need people to be faithful and caring, and perseverance to carry on in the best way they can, so mums and dads and children in our communities may know we love you and want to know you. Make us sensitive to others and use opportunities to speak of your loving presence in their lives. We thank you for all who continue to serve you and know your love in quiet moments and through difficult problems, in grief and family upsets and times of joy and laughter.

Ever present God hear our prayer.

Loving God, we pray for all firefighters at this time. For all affected by fires or floods.  Those who have lost homes and livelihoods. Give them strength and courage to get back to some sort of normality, and all involved in helping them. We pray for all who have died and those coping without their loved ones. We pray especially for those who have asked for our prayers who we name aloud or in the quiet of our hearts………………………………..

Ever present God hear our prayer.

Prayer for Archbishop-elect Jeremy – Rev’d Helen.

Loving God, we give you thanks for your servants in every age especially those who have guided us on our spiritual journeys.  Grant that we with Kaye and all your saints may be brought to a joyful resurrection and the fulfilment of your kingdom.

Almighty God you have promised to hear our prayers, grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
