GOD IS WITH YOU
The front-cover this week shows how St. Luke’s is currently decorated. Throughout October, Canungra turns pink to demonstrate support and raise funds for those affected by cancer. The team at St. Luke’s have done a great job in decorating the building. Please go and take a look, then scan the QR code at the front of church and vote for us as the best dressed building (there’s a nice prize at stake!)
Being a part of this initiative is an important statement for our church because it shows that we are part of the community and that we stand alongside those affected by cancer. Of course, the Bible has a lot to say about how Jesus can heal, it has a lot to say about answered prayer too: In fact, this Sunday we are looking at a gospel reading which includes a parable about a woman who keeps pestering a judge to help her. It’s a bit of a strange one but essentially Jesus is telling us keep on praying, even when it looks like it’s not working. Even when all wisdom tells you that constantly asking and seeing no results is breaking your heart and you’d be better off moving on.
The main thing that I like from that front cover photo is the pink sign which simply says ‘Believe.’ For some, that gives hope that even in severe health crises we can believe in a God who heals. For others it’s a reminder that, even when the healing does not come, the church stands for something worth believing in. Because just like that earthly judge of the parable, God always hears you. God hears and, whether the healing comes or not, God cares and God stands alongside you.
By turning pink, by being part of a community project and sharing a ‘non-church message,’ the church is modelling something of that God who is always with you no matter what.

This week’s intercessions: Prepared by Sonya
Almighty God, your son Jesus Christ has promised that you will hear us when we ask in faith: receive the prayers we offer.
Let us pray for the preservation of the earth. We give thanks for the beauty and abundance of the earth. Give us and all peoples grace to live in harmony with your creation and wisdom and generosity in our use of its bounty.
God of grace, hear our prayer.
Let us pray for peace and shared prosperity. We give thanks for all those who serve the common good. We pray for all who carry civic and political responsibilities throughout the world. Help leaders of all nations put aside selfish ambition and seek to be the instruments of your will for humanity and carry out your desire for the welfare of all people. Grant that we may so honour one another that all may be enriched by our common heritage and freed from despair, poverty and exclusion.
God of grace, hear our prayer.
Let us pray for the Church and its mission. We give thanks for the good news of salvation for all people. Strengthen us for our work in the world, empower your Church to proclaim the gospel in service, word and sacrament. We pray for the Archbishop of Canterbury, as he travels in Australia, our Archbishop Phillip, Bp John and Tom as they minister among us, and our retired clergy as they offer their time, wisdom and experience in our parish.
God of grace, hear our prayer.
Let us pray for those in need. We give thanks that you are the God who brings mercy and wholeness. Help all who suffer to trust in your goodness and hope in your faithfulness, even in the middle of their suffering. Let them be filled with patience and joy in your presence as they wait for your healing touch. Today we especially pray for (…..and) those who we name aloud or in the silence of our hearts
God of grace, hear our prayer.
Let us give thanks for the faithful departed. Everlasting God, we remember all those who have gone before, walked the same path that we tread, and, by their example, encouragement, wise words and teaching led others into your Kingdom; and so we offer our grateful thanks particularly for those whose anniversary falls at this time.
God of grace, hear our prayer.
Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers.
Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
October Retiring Collection: Turning Canungra Pink
Turning Canungra Pink in October is an annual event which is run by the Canungra Chamber of Commerce to raise awareness and funds for all types of cancer. This event was started in 2011 by a local business owner, herself a breast cancer survivor. In 2013 the Canungra Chamber of Commerce became involved, creating a fundraising event that lasted throughout October and involved most of the businesses and many residents in the town. In 2021 Turning Canungra Pink successfully raised over $79,000 - a great effort in a small town. Funds raised are donated 50% to Cancer Council Queensland and 50% to Pink Assist, a fund used to provide support to local people with cancer.
