GIVE THANKS

Last Sunday was a lot of fun. We had three four-legged guests at our 8am service at St Luke’s and then at 4pm at St George’s there were ten waggy tails for our animal blessing service. We had hoped to hold that service outside amongst God’s creation but creation decided to rain rather a lot, so we were inside the church with our animals.

Animals are such a blessing to the lives of so many people so it was wonderful to be able to take the opportunity to bless them in God’s name and to say thank you to God for them.

Saying thank you is a big theme this Sunday. At all three of our services, we are looking at the Gospel reading from Luke 17 where Jesus heals ten leprosy patients. Only one of the ten returned to Jesus and said thank you.

Our 4pm service is entirely focussed this week on us taking the opportunity to say ‘Thank You’ to God for all that we feel grateful for.

In the morning services we will also be giving thanks but we will be thinking also about why the other nine did not return to Jesus and also, as awkward as it may be, we will be grappling with the question of why so many people come to church but do not return.

Those of us who do return to church each week, do so for many reasons: One of them is to give thanks to God, another one is to come closer to God and see God’s creation in a different way.

Hopefully you go out from this Sunday’s service seeing things slightly differently so that this coming week may be filled with things that stop and make you say ‘Thank You’ to God, and return to say ‘Thank You’ in church next week!

Year’s Mind Anniversaries this month

Phil Oldenburg, Dawn Page

This week’s intercessions: Prepared by John N

For Peace.....God of the nations, whose sovereign rule brings justice and peace, have mercy on our broken and divided world. Shed abroad your peace in the hearts of all, that peoples may learn to live as members of one family and in obedience to your law.

Lord, in your mercy..... Hear our prayer.

For Good Government...  Spirit of justice and truth, grant to our governments and all who serve in public life, wisdom and skill, imagination and energy. Help us to commit ourselves to the common good that our land may be a secure home for all its peoples.

Lord, in your mercy..... Hear our prayer.

For the Church... Most gracious Father, we pray for your holy catholic church, fill it with all truth, where it is corrupt, purge it, where it is in error, direct it, where anything is amiss, reform it, where it is right, strengthen and confirm it, where it is in want, furnish it, where it is divided, heal it, and unite us in your love.

Lord, in your mercy..... Hear our prayer.

For the sick, the poor the lonely and neglected...  God of mercy and pity, remember the homeless, the aged, all who have none to care for them, and for the sick particularly for…… .....those who we name aloud or in the silence of our heart. Heal those who are broken in body or spirit, and turn their sorrow into joy. Help us to minister to their needs.

Lord, in your mercy..... Hear our prayer

For our homes... Visit, Lord, our homes and drive far from them all the snares of the evil one. Let you holy angels dwell in them to preserve us in peace and may your blessing rest upon them always.

Lord, in your mercy..... Hear our prayer.

The Media.... Almighty God, you proclaim your truth in every age by many voices, direct those who speak where many listen, those who write what many read and those who influence what many see, that they may do their part in making the heart of this people wise, its mind sound and its will righteous.

Lord, in your mercy..... Hear our prayer.

For God’s guidance... Almighty and ever living God, direct, sanctify and govern  our hearts and bodies in the ways of your law and the works of your commandments. By your protection may we be kept safe in body and soul and serve you with generous and joyful hearts, bringing glory to your holy name.

Lord, in your mercy..... Hear our prayer

We say this grace together ..Go before us O Lord in all our doings with your most gracious favour and assist us with your continual help, that in all our works, begun, continued and ended in you, we may glorify your holy name and finally by your mercy obtain everlasting life.

October Retiring Collection: Turning Canungra Pink

Turning Canungra Pink in October is an annual event which is run by the Canungra Chamber of Commerce to raise awareness and funds for all types of cancer. This event was started in 2011 by a local business owner, herself a breast cancer survivor. In 2013 the Canungra Chamber of Commerce became involved, creating a fundraising event that lasted throughout October and involved most of the businesses and many residents in the town. In 2021 Turning Canungra Pink successfully raised over $79,000 - a great effort in a small town. Funds raised are donated 50% to Cancer Council Queensland and 50% to Pink Assist, a fund used to provide support to local people with cancer.
