Talking politics

If you are sitting in a pew reading this on Sunday then the federal election is over! Hopefully you voted or have a great excuse for not doing so (like not being Australian for example!)

Last Sunday I finished our morning services by imploring you all to go out and vote for whichever candidate you feel would work in ways whereby we might see God’s ‘kingdom come’ a little bit more. I was encouraging you to see that our faith requires us to engage in politics.

In all three services I preached about the climate crisis and spoke about women’s rights and LGBTI rights too. I was preaching what some would see as a political message. Not everybody likes that. In previous churches I’ve become used to criticism from people who don’t think you should bring politics into church.

I generally respond with a quote by the late, great Archbishop Desmond Tutu who said: “When people say that the Bible and politics don’t mix, I ask them which Bible they are reading.”

With constant words and actions Jesus stood up for (and sat down with) the marginalised. He literally turned the tables on the rich establishment. Jesus’ whole earthly ministry was political. So much so that it got him killed.

We aren’t truly following Him if our faith does not drive us to speak and to act.

We can vote for different political parties, that’s OK, because that’s not the point. Allegiance to a particular party shouldn’t define our beliefs, Jesus should. Faith in Him calls us to both speak up and listen out in church. It also calls us to then go out of church into the world and vote, pray, speak and act in ways that might see God’s ‘kingdom come’ a little bit more.

This week’s intercessions: Prepared by Keith

Gracious God, we pray for your presence and peace as we offer our prayers to you.

Lord of light, shine deeply into our hearts as we pray for your Church throughout the world - for all the many parts of the body of Christ that seek to be expressions of faith and love. We pray for the Church in this Diocese, for Philip, our Archbishop, for John, our Bishop, and Tom our Priest. Fill the hearts and minds of the people of this Parish as we seek to share the love of God in the many communities to which we belong.

Lord, hear our prayer: Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!

Lord of peace and love, we pray for those parts of the world that are suffering through conquest, conflict, poverty, overcrowding and climate change. We pray especially for the people of the Ukraine - and for all the countries affected by this conflict. We pray for rationality and compassion in the decisions that leaders take.

Lord, hear our prayer: Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!

Lord of all, we pray for this country of Australia, especially for the new government as it takes office. We pray for those who have been elected, for a right exercising of their roles in building a strong democracy.

Lord, hear our prayer: Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!

Lord of healing and wholeness, we pray for those who are in need at this time - for the homeless, the lonely, the outcast, the sick, praying particularly for …………….. Surround them with your grace and healing balm.

Lord, hear our prayer: Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!

Lord of comfort, surround those who are bereaved with your consoling touch. We pray for those that are suffering in grief, and we remember those who have gone before, and been markers of faith for us on our journey through life.

Lord, hear our prayer: Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!

Accept our prayers through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
