HE’S GONE!
This Thursday the Church celebrated Ascension - The moment when, 40 days after Easter Sunday, Jesus ascended to heaven. I say ‘celebrated’ but we don’t tend to do much and maybe that’s partly because we’re a bit unsure about the event.
The easy part of Ascension is accepting a promise that Jesus is coming back but knowing that He has gone. The difficult part is knowing how we respond, because a lot of us have experiences where we feel Jesus is close but also periods where we feel He has left us and we wonder if He’s coming back.
What do we do when it feels like Jesus has gone? The disciples had two options: They could have walked away and said “That was nice while it lasted now, let’s move on to other things”. When Jesus seems far away we might feel tempted to focus our attention elsewhere. The second option is to do exactly what the disciples did and focus our attention on what Jesus told us to do: the disciples got to work, organising how they would witness to others about Jesus and thereby how they would ‘grow His church’. They also prayed (a lot). Essentially they did what St Augustine tells us to do: “Pray as if everything depends on God; work as if everything depends on you”
Because, of course, Christianity is a two-part thing. One part is God, the other is us; God works in our lives and Ascension only truly makes sense when we remember that Pentecost happened 10 days later and the Holy Spirit filled those disciples. But we have to choose not to drift away in those times when it feels like Jesus has gone but choose instead to work and pray and to expect a return.

This week’s intercessions: Prepared by Peta
Our Heavenly Father, we humbly bring our prayers before you.
We pray for our world, and its resources which sustain us. Guide us to be good stewards of all that you give us, so that we tread lightly, resisting apathy or greed.
We pray for your church and all who work in your name. We pray for Her Majesty the Queen, Archbishop Phillip, Bishop John, and your servants Tom, Allan and John. We give thanks for the faithfulness of Mary the mother of Jesus and Elizabeth.
Rejoice in the Lord, O you righteous,
And give thanks to his holy name.
We give thanks and pray for all who work for others across the world and in our communities. We pray especially for Mercy Ships, who with no fanfare follow Christ’s example of caring for the poor and marginalised. On National Sorry Day we pray for shared healing, respect and reconciliation across our nation.
We bring before you Yemen, Afghanistan and Ukraine, and all who are suffering and displaced due to war. Our hearts break at such inhumanity and unnecessary suffering. Lord, we ask you to touch the hearts of those who could make a difference.
Rejoice in the Lord, O you righteous,
And give thanks to his holy name.
We pray for those around us experiencing illness or loss, poverty or homelessness. We pray especially for those known to us whom we name aloud or in the silence of our hearts….
Rejoice in the Lord, O you righteous,
And give thanks to his holy name.
We give thanks for the faithful departed, and those whose year’s mind occurs at this time. We pray for those who are grieving the painful loss of loved ones, especially those families in Texas. We give you thanks that you loved us before we were born and have prepared a place for each of us when our lives are spent.
Hear our prayers, Heavenly Father, and grant that what we have asked for in faith, we might by your grace, receive. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
