ADVENT

Welcome to Advent and the four Sundays that lead up to Christmas Day! Each Sunday we light another candle on the advent wreath and the songs slowly become more and more carol-like. However, you have to hang around church for several years to work out what is going on with the Bible readings during Advent.

The time of year when people are feeling Christmassy is potentially one of the best opportunities to welcome people into church with a joyful seasonal message from the Bible. Instead, the lectionary (the worldwide set-readings from the Bible) gives us seemingly endless readings about a guy who ate locusts in the wilderness (John the Baptist) and portents of impending doom!

Here's how I make sense of it: People often talk about a different theme each Sunday in advent but that generally confuses me. What sticks in my mind more is people, and in particular people’s stories. Every year, the four Sundays of advent tell four people’s stories – four people who are all (at least loosely) connected to Christmas:

We start Advent this Sunday with the main character – Jesus - and a story to make us look forward with expectation of the 2nd coming of Jesus as we prepare to celebrate the anniversary of the 1st coming. Next Sunday we turn to John the Baptist and a story that helps us prepare to accept Jesus. On the 3rd Sunday of Advent, we again hear about John the Baptist, but I’m going to focus on a reading about Mary and a story which fills us with joy about the birth of Jesus. Then on the final Sunday it's Mary again, but crucially Joseph’s story too: This helps us reflect on the complicated feelings involved in truly accepting the gift of Jesus.

Join us for four stories leading up to the greatest story of all on the 25th!

This week’s intercessions: Prepared by John N

This is the day that the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it.

As we start a new Christian year, let us first thank God for the wonders of his creation, for the beauty of the natural world around us and for all forms of life which share God’s creation with us. Let us ever be careful to preserve what we enjoy for those who will come after us.

Lord, in your mercy,...hear our prayer

We thank God for the peace and prosperity in which we live and pray for all those who, for reasons beyond their contro,l are no longer able to carry out the lives to which they have been accustomed. We pray for all who have been affected by natural disasters, floods in parts of Australia, in Pakistan and Nigeria, the drought in Somalia, and the recent earthquake in Indonesia. We pray for all who have lost their homes, possessions, their family members and loved ones.

Lord, in your mercy,...hear our prayer

We pray for those parts of the world where there is conflict and civil strife, for those who have lost so much in the senseless war in Ukraine, and for all who provide relief and friendship to those who have lost so much.

Lord, in your mercy,...hear our prayer

We pray for the world-wide Anglican communion of which we are members and ask for God’s guidance for church leaders in so many different circumstances as they seek ways of promoting the Gospel message among increasingly secular populations.

We pray for our archbishop Philip, our regional bishop John, our priest Tom and all who organise and sustain our parish activities during the week.

Lord, in your mercy,...hear our prayer

We thank God for our health and strength, and our ability to enjoy everything that God gives us. Let us pray for all those who at this time are suffering short or long–term disability or illness, and all those who are no longer able to look after themselves. We pray for doctors, nurses and other medical staff who treat and care for them, either in hospitals, residential care or in their own homes. Today we pray for....... and any others who need our prayers at this time.

Lord, in your mercy,...hear our prayer.

We give thanks for all those who live among us and provide for our daily needs, the emergency workers, those who work in shops and offices, the schools and all those with whom we are friends and see day by day.

We remember all those who have been influential in our lives but are no longer with us particularly...those who’s years mind occurs at this time.

Lord, in your mercy,...hear our prayer.

Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers, Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
