IN COMMUNION

CHRIST THE KING

The worldwide church calendar is filled with days where we remember saints and other holy names, but there is one who stands head and shoulders above all of them as the name above all names and the king above all kings. This Sunday is ‘Christ the King’ Sunday, it comes at the end of the church calendar, just before advent when the Church anticipates Christ’s second coming and prepares to celebrate his first arrival and coronation with gold, frankincense and myrrh.

Theologically speaking Christ is King for two reasons:

According to Cyril of Alexandria, "Christ has dominion over all creatures, ...by essence and by nature." What he means is that Jesus is king by nature of who he is, but also what he has done has earned him that title. Jesus is both fully God and fully human, this naturally elevates him above all others because He created all others. ‘The king’ is just a human way of articulating that elevated status.

But whilst some kings are born into the role others earn it, in the case of human kings that’s usually through killing others in battle, but in the case of Christ it’s through his own death and what he did for us on that cross. Cyril argued he “is also King by acquired, as well as by natural right, for he is our Redeemer.”

But there is a third way in which Christ can be king and it’s not one that you can argue or reason about theologically like Cyril, it’s simply something you submit to. Just like Christ entered the world and was coronated with gifts in that stable, we can allow Christ to enter our hearts, we can submit to Him, we can use all the gifts we’ve been given for him and we can live like Christ is the king of our life.

Creator of the Universes, we thank you for the incredible diversity and beauty of the planet that you created for us to enjoy. Send your Holy Spirit to open our hearts to appreciate the wonders all around us, the incredible balance and importance of life, both incredibly small as well as large. Instil in us the desire to do all that we can to preserve this planet for future generations.

Creator of the Universe, hear our prayer.

Our Father in Heaven, we thank you for the sacrifice of your beloved son, Jesus Christ who you sent as promised, to Shepherd your flock here on Earth. Thank you for the faithful church leaders who guide us: Phillip, John and Tom.  Bless them all so that we may receive guidance to keep faith and not be scattered and driven away from your flock.

Compassionate Creator of All, hear our prayer.

Everlasting God, we thank you for the many people in our community who unselfishly ignore the danger to themselves to keep us safe and well in these difficult times. We pray for those who work to gently guide the children so that they too can learn of the love that you have for them and all humankind.

Loving Father, hear our prayer.

Creator of the World who sacrificed your Son for us – you know of our many weaknesses and we thank you for your forgiveness. We pray for the sick, the suffering, the lonely and the ostracized. We pray for those who have asked for our prayers as well as those known to us either quietly or in silence……….. . Open our hearts so that we may give generously of our time, our gifts & other offerings, remembering the poor widow who gave all that she had.

Loving God, hear our prayer.

Our Father in Heaven we look forward to the day when “Your Kingdom Will Come”, when we, with your faithful servants who have gone before us and all our loved ones, will be re-united once again. We give thanks for those who have guided us on our Faith Journey and remember those whose year’s mind anniversaries occur at this time……………

Creator of All, hear our prayer.

Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers. Grant that what we have asked in faith, we may by your grace receive.

Parish Quiet Day - Saturday 26 November

All are invited and encouraged to attend the Quiet Day on November 26, commencing at 9:00am. We expect to be finished by 2:30pm. The subject for the day is the parable of the prodigal son, looked at against a backdrop of Rembrandt’s famous painting.  This is a most profound journey and takes us to a place we all need to go as we come to the end of a year and look ahead to Advent, Christmas and all that 2023 might paint on the canvas of our lives. The times of quiet reflection can be used just as you wish. This is for everyone!  Don’t miss this rich opportunity to look at this well-known parable with fresh eyes.  Please contact Barbara for more info or to let her know of your intention to attend.  0497016178
