First Sunday of
Advent
Sentence for the Day
Stand up and raise your heads; your redemption is drawing near.
Luke 21.28
Collect
Eternal God,
you have taught us that the night is far spent
and the day is at hand:
keep us awake and alert,
watching for your kingdom,
and make us strong in faith,
so that when Christ comes in glory to judge the earth,
we may go out joyfully to greet him;
and, with all your saints,
may worship you for ever;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.
Prayer for our New Parish Priest
We give you thanks, O God
for calling your servant Fr Tom to come amongst us as priest and pastor.
Strengthen and sustain him as he prepares for this transition.
Be with us as we welcome him into our midst,
that we may faithfully minister together
in the name of the one who said to his disciples,
‘I am among you as one who serves,’
our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
Liturgy: via PowerPoint + APBA Colour – White
Readings: Jeremiah 33.14-16; Psalm 25.1-10;1Thessalonians 3.9-13; Luke 21.25-38
Fr Peter writes:
Happy New Year. Today we begin the Christian year for the year of Luke.
We have come through a year of uncertainty in many areas of our lives including the COVID19 challenges, employment uncertainty, locum ministry and search for a permanent priest and many other factors. Advent reminds us that there is light at the end of the tunnel.
We prepare to celebrate the coming of Jesus, at Bethlehem, over 2000 years ago, as well as looking forward to the coming of the Lord again; Fr Tom has been announced as the next Priest-in-Charge; and some COVID19 restrictions are being lifted. The sentence for today, ‘Stand up and raise your heads; your redemption is drawing near’ (Luke 21.28) is a great message for us.
Last Tuesday I attended the diocesan launch of the Innovative RAP which is the next stage of our Reconciliation Action Plan for our interaction with the traditional owners of this land. It was very uplifting as well as being challenging as it was led by Aboriginal and Torres Strait members of our church. It was live streamed and is still available on YouTube Launch of the Diocesan Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan, 23rd November 2021 - YouTube The main message was that text is not important as it is action and the heart which really expresses where we are. The ABM Advent reflections Songs from a Strange Land: An Australian Advent Calendar · Anglican Board of Mission (abmission.org) relate to Advent in our Australian perspective. I invite you to consider them for your Advent Journey.
Let us open our hearts and minds to the Lord as we continue our journey together.

Meditation (a weekly thought from Barbara)
When I wake in the morning, my mind starts teeming like a creek full of minnows: duties, plans, the ironing pile, meals for the week, ego controlling me; must let go and let God. Can you do it?
Labyrinth Message
This week's labyrinth message for you to "walk with" is : Sometimes in the midst of the hustle and bustle of life we just get caught up in our own day to day world .. being a Family Taxi Service, ensuring that our work and home "to do" lists are ticked off, on the go, go,go … plus now also having to getting ready for the end of the year festivities and holiday break - its never-ending!
The Gospel for this week reminds us to stop and keep an eye out for God's "Big Picture". Jesus invites us to "Watch ...and Pray" … to be truely present to what God is doing ...sometimes unnoticed right under our collective noses …
I wonder what He will surprise you with this week ? ….
Prayers of the people Prepared by Brenda N
“This is the day that the Lord has made”...Let us rejoice and be glad in it.
On this first day of the new Christian year, we wait for your coming, Lord Jesus, and we bring to you our prayers for your people. Prince of Peace, bring your peace to our troubled world, which so much needs our message of love and forgiveness. We pray for so many in different countries who are facing starvation and oppression due to civil strife.
Be with us, O lord....And grant us a glimpse of your glory.
We pray for your church and all who minister in this parish. We give thanks for our Archbishop Philip, our regional Bishop John, and our locum priest Peter. We pray for our newly appointed priest Tom, and that his visa processing will be quick and easy. We pray for the work of our parish council and those all who spend time working to ensure the smooth running of parish affairs.
Be with us, O lord....And grant us a glimpse of your glory.
We give thanks for the world in which we live, for its beauty and its bounty. Help us to guard the habitats of all creatures and be faithful stewards of its resources, so that those who come after us can enjoy all that God is now providing for us.
Be with us, O lord....And grant us a glimpse of your glory.
We pray for the sick and those in need, for all who are in constant pain, for the confused and the lonely. We remember all who treat and care for those in hospitals, clinics and residential homes. We pray for all who have suffered from Covid 19, those who have lost loved ones and all who are prevented by restrictions from visiting those to whom they are close. Today we are asked to pray particularly for....... and for any others you may mention aloud or in your own hearts.
Be with us, O lord....And grant us a glimpse of your glory.
We remember all those whom we have known but are no longer with us, and we pray for the loved ones of those who drowned while trying to cross the English Channel in search of a better life. We remember James Noble the first indigenous Australian ordained priest, and St Andrew whose day falls on the 30th of November.
Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers....grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord, amen
