Collect
Loving God,
you have made us in your own image,
creating us male and female,
and you have consecrated the covenant of marriage
so that in it is signified the spiritual marriage
between Christ and his Church:
pour your grace upon all who are called to this holy state,
that, keeping their promise of faithfulness to each other,
they may reflect in their lives your love for us all;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Creator God, whose hands shaped every part of our universe, help us to continue to see your presence in all forms of life and care for and preserve it all. May we never cease to marvel at the works of your hands. Forgive us when we put human desires above your will. Help us to live our lives in peace and harmony with all people of every nation.
In your mercy, hear our prayer.
Faithful God, you show your amazing love and forgiveness towards us each day in both small and worldwide ways. We thank you for all believers in your church everywhere. Bless all those in leadership roles. We especially pray for Archbishop Jeremy, Bishop John and Reverend Helen.
Help each one of us to reflect your love as we minister to our community.
In your mercy, hear our prayer.
Loving God, may we always keep our hearts and minds fixed on you. We thank you that we have your word to guide us. As we encounter challenges in our everyday life may we always delight in your word. As it reminds us of your glory, power and love may we never forget your promises. Help us daily to come to you as little children with open loving hearts.
In your mercy, hear our prayer.
Caring God, who has spoken to us of your eternal love for each of us by the gift of your Son, remind us daily to show that love to all. We remember those who have lost loved ones and those whose yearly memorial occurs at this time. We thank you for your loving arms around us.
In your mercy, hear our prayer.
Almighty God, you have promised to always hear our prayers. Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our lord. Amen.
A note from Helen
Most of us have difficulty making sense of suffering within a Christian context. We question God’s role in our suffering, and the suffering of others. Is our, or their, suffering deserved, or undeserved. Job addresses this problem of suffering. And, within this book of Job, we find Satan (hasatan) in a role very different to the one we are used to. Satan is identified as, not as the source of evil, but as God’s ‘eyes and ears’ on earth, as a type of ‘undercover spy’. In this passage, Satan returns from ‘scoping out the earth’, and when God boasts about one righteous man, Satan responds by suggesting that the only reason Job is righteous is because of his good fortune, and states that if he were to lose his wealth and power, he will turn away from his creator.
And here begins 41 chapters filled with descriptions of Job’s suffering, the encouragement by his family and friends for Job to ‘curse’ God for his suffering and his refusal to do this, and the ‘backwards and forwards’ conversations between Job and God.
But despite this, we are left with the reality that life is difficult, pain happens, and regardless of its source, we must endure and make the best of it. No one is immune from the suffering of mind, body, spirit or relationships. Suffering can either ennoble us or destroy us.
There are two common ways of explaining the origin of suffering: Either - everything in our life - good and ill – comes from God’s hand without our consent; Or - our good and bad fortune is a reflection of our own thoughts. But I do not find either of them are reasonable or helpful explanations for all the suffering in the world. To some extent, the problem of suffering will remain inscrutable to us.
