PARISH BULLETIN

19th September 2021

Seventeenth Sunday

After Pentecost

Sentence for the Day

Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I have come not to call the righteous, but sinners.

Matthew 9.13

Collect

Almighty God,
who through your Son Jesus Christ
called Matthew from the selfish pursuit of gain
to become an apostle and evangelist:
free us from all greed and love of riches
so that we may follow the steps of our Lord Jesus Christ
in the way of self-giving love;
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Prayer of the Week:

God and Father of all,

you have taught us through your Son that the last shall be first,

and have made a little child the measure of your kingdom:

give us the wisdom from above,

so that we may understand that in your sight

the one who serves is the greatest of all.

We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Liturgy:  via PowerPoint + APBA   Colour – Green

Readings: Proverbs 31.10-31;      Psalm 1;       James 3.1-12;              Mark 9.30-37

Prayer is essentially all about our relationship with God, and it is this relationship that is at the heart of the Christian faith. Prayer should be one of the easiest things in the world—after all, it is surely only a matter of talking to God—and yet many of us struggle with it.

How can we grow in prayer? If we take the example of a tree, we find that it grows from a small seed to a large tree if the roots are in good soil, are watered by the rain and receive light from the sun. We needs the same things to help us grow in prayer—food water and sunlight.

Our food will include having a time with God each day on our own to talk about what is on our heart as well as meeting to worship and pray with other weekly. Our water will be nourishment we receive from reading the Bible and making it part of how we live our lives. Our light comes from God’s love as we open our lives to the fullness of all that God wants to gove to us a we pray and care for those around us. God-Father, Son and Holy Spirit—will provide all that we need to help us grow in our relationship with him through the ups and downs of life.

Here are some suggestions:

Try starting with five minutes on your own with God—it could be in the car, in the batheroom, on a walk. Mull over a Bible passage, for example Psalm 42.1-2, or a hymn/song or recent talk/sermon. Talk it through with him. Pray the Lord’s Prayer.

Make friends with stillness and silence. Turn off the radio, TV, computer and ipod—and listen to the sounds around you. Rest in God’s love.

Try praying ‘as you go’. As you walk out of the house ask God to walk with you through the day. As you meet people through the day pary for God to bless them.

Reflect by taking a few minutes to run through the day in your mind, learning to recognise and give thanks for where you can see God at work, as well as saying sorry for when things didn’t go as planned. This simple discipline really helps me to grow in prayer.

Let’s remember “the prayer of a person living right with God is something powerful to be reckoned with” (James 5.16)

With my best wishes, Fr Harry.

Labyrinth Message

This week's labyrinth message for you to "walk with" is : I wonder if something could be striving to emerge in your life at the moment that resonates with your "inner Divine child"? With all the challenges and difficulties our world faces - it's easy to be sometimes downcast. Perhaps sometimes we need to let our "inner Divine child loose"… ?

In this week's Gospel, Jesus reminds us of the gift of "Divine Childhood" in our lives. What would it feel like for you to be able to truly believe yourself to be and to act as a "beloved child of God"? … to radically trust in God's providence, to simply delight in being with Him and others as your True Self  ...without the mask(s) we so often adopt around others …  To more truly be the person you are Divinely called to be and become ? .. Oh, and remember that everyone else is a Divine child too :)!

Prayers of the people Prepared by John C

Loving God, you chose to come among us in weakness and humility, servant to those who are rejected and despised, hear our prayers. We give thanks and praise, O God, for the generosity of your creation, for its beauty to delight in and sustain us. Help people all over the world to find ways of properly caring for what you have provided.

Please help those who are suffering greatly from the impact of the Covid virus, through the lack of health care, vaccine, work, or support.

Jesus, friend and servant of all hear our prayer.

God we pray for your worldwide church and for all who work to help bring your light, love and kindness to others. Lord there are many hurting in our community. Help us to look out for people around us. Help us to step out in faith knowing that even little actions of love have wonderful outcomes.

We uphold our school chaplains giving thanks for all the solid support they are giving to children, teachers and families at this time and we pray that you would soon provide a replacement chaplain for Canungra primary school.

Jesus, friend and servant of all hear our prayer.

God of the sick and sorrowing, we pray for all in trouble or distress, especially praying at this time for….and others known to us who we ever name aloud or in silent prayer. ……..(Pause.)……….

We especially pray for those who are fearful and deeply hurting in lock down and in other hardship and pray for needed help to come to them, giving special thanks for medical and social workers.

Free us all from selfishness and envy that we may help establish a community of care, where no one is neglected, unwanted or unloved.

Jesus, friend and servant of all hear our prayer.

We give thanks and praise, O God, that you lead your people to freedom and everlasting life. We remember all who have died in your friendship and love. We give thanks for those from this parish who have served you and for all whom we have loved. Free us from all that binds us, that, following the example of St Matthew and Mother Teresa, we may follow you Lord, and be there for others.

Ever generous God, in your mercy, hear the prayers we offer and, empower us by your Holy Spirit. Amen.

Year’s Mind Anniversaries this month

Chaplaincy Tamborine Mountain and Canungra School Chaplaincy Committee need a secretary. It is a very easy task. Come to 8 meetings per year and do the minutes and to also report on the finances which is all processed by and prepared by SU, the employment service for the school chaplains.

Also, it has been decided not to have an annual chaplaincy dinner this year because of the Covid uncertainty, instead there will be a virtual dinner with chaplaincy highlights put on a chaplaincy Facebook page along with an opportunity to buy tickets for "balloon prizes" as a fund raiser for chaplaincy.
