The Patronal Festival of St Luke

Sentence of the Day

The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few;

ask therefore the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into his harvest.

Luke 10:2

   Collect for St Luke’s Day

Almighty God,
who inspired your servant Luke the physician
to set forth in his gospel
the love and healing power of your Son:
graciously continue in your Church
this love and power to heal,
to the praise and glory of your name;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God,
now and for ever. Amen.

Twenty-First Sunday After Pentecost

God of unchangeable power,

when the heaven and earth were made,

the morning stars sang together

and the host of heaven shouted for joy:

open our eyes to the wonders of creation

and teach us to use all things for good,

to the honour of your glorious name;

through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Fr Harry writes:

 To St Luke, a Gentile, we owe the beautifully written Gospel of St Luke, and the Book of Acts. He was a Greek physician, a disciple of St Paul, a companion on some of his missionary journeys and an inspired writer. Luke’s gospel focuses on the compassion of Christ. His gospel contains some of the most moving parables, such as the Good Samaritan and Prodigal Son. This, with his emphasis on poverty, prayer and purity of heart, make up much of his appeal to the Gentiles, for whom he wrote.

 Luke is the patron saint of doctors, surgeons and artists (due to his picturesque style of writing). His symbol in Christian Iconology is the winged ox.

The parishioners at St Luke’s, Canungra, are proud of their beautiful 1936 church, which is kept in pristine condition, and hope that many will join with them for the Evening Prayer Service on Sunday at 5.00pm. This will be followed by a sumptuous BBQ and fellowship.

 A Patronal Festival celebrates the life of a Faith Community and gives thanks for the qualities of their saint and those who have worshiped at St Luke’s over the past 85 years.

                                                                        With my best wishes, Fr Harry

 Prayers of the people  Prepared by John N

 In our prayers today let us first thank God for the wonders of his creation, for the heavens above and the earth beneath, and for all the living creatures which share God’s world with us. We pray for those who live in areas which have been destroyed and polluted by man’s greed and power over nature, and we pray for all who work for the preservation of what is in danger of being lost for ever, and for the recovery of what can be nurtured and flourish again for our benefit.

Lord, in your mercy...Hear our prayer.

 We remember the world-wide Anglican Communion to which we belong and pray for church leaders around the world as they face difficulties, indifference and persecution for what they do, and as they seek guidance through conflicting interpretations of what they know to be true. We pray for our Archbishop Philip. our Regional Bishop John, our locum priest Harry, and all those who work within our parish as we seek to proclaim God’s word to those around us.

Lord, in your mercy...Hear our prayer.

 Let us pray for all those areas around the world where there is conflict and civil strife, those who have lost loved ones, their homes and possessions and have been forced to seek refuge in other countries where they may not be welcomed. In particular, we pray for those living in fear for their lives in Afghanistan, and those who are trapped with no means of escape. We pray for so many who have been refugees for months and years in camps where there is no sign of any long-term solution to their difficulties, and for those who leave their countries and travel for months in the hope of finding better lives elsewhere.

Lord, in your mercy...Hear our prayer.

 Let us thank God for our health and strength and our ability to enjoy God’s gifts to us, and we pray for all who, through accident, illness or infirmity are no longer able to continue the way of life to which they have been accustomed. We pray for all whose lives are dedicated to the relief and treatment of those who are ill, and particularly we remember those who have been affected by the Covid pandemic, those who have lost loved ones or who have been unable to visit family members due to travel restrictions. We pray for those working in testing and vaccination stations and those preparing and distributing vaccines around the world, Today we pray particularly for........and anyone else known to us at this.

Lord, in your mercy...Hear our prayer.

 We pray for our local communities, on the mountain and around Canungra, for those in the emergency services, schools and all those who provide us with all we need in shops, offices and Council workers.

Lord, in your mercy...Hear our prayer.

 We thank God for the lives of those who have been influential in our lives but are no longer with us.

 Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers, Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

 All Saints and All Souls Day

On Sunday, 31st October, we will be keeping All Saints’ Day (1st November) and All Souls’ Day (2nd November). During the service there will be the Commemoration of the Faithful Departed when the names of our departed loved ones are read out and prayed for and a candle lit in their memory.

If you would like someone’s name read out, please PRINT their names clearly on the list at the church entrance at St George’s and St Luke’s or email them to the office tamborinemountain@anglicanchurchsq.org.au

 Labyrinth Message

This week's labyrinth message for you to "walk with" is : Do you sometimes feel "way over your head" as you live your "life of faith" 10+ miles ahead of you

comfort zone? "Are you serious God … ……..you want me to do what ?? ! "

In this week's Gospel, we are reminded of the "sending out of the 70" …Can you imagine how they felt to be sent out in pairs - without Jesus accompanying them - to all the places He planned to visit later ? [ Talk about no pressure :)!] Yet for all this … they went…. And, with the Holy Spirit's power and guidance, it all worked out pretty well. I wonder where you may be called to go for Jesus this week?

 Chaplaincy

The Tamborine Mountain High School has decided to no longer have a school chaplain and to instead use the Government grant funds to contribute to the employment of a social worker. This comes as quite a shock after school chaplaincy running in the school for about 17 years.

By making this decision the school also loses over $25,000 of community input into the chaplaincy at the High School along with a lot of other student and family caring and support. I don't feel that this decision is in the best interests of the students, staff and families plus the lose of the quiet Christian presence a chaplain provides. Please pray for the high school trusting that they will once again appreciate the importance of chaplaincy and return to having the chaplaincy service in 2022.                                                 John Corner Chair of the LCC for Tamborine and Canungra.
