Sentence for the Day
Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and curing every disease and every sickness. Matthew 9.35
Collect of the Day
God of compassion, you have shown us in Christ
that your love is never ending:
enable us both to love you with all our heart
and to love one another as Christ loved us.
Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Prayer for Australia Day
We bless you, God of the universe, for this land,
for its contrasts of landscape and climate,
for its abundance of wealth and opportunity.
We bless you for our history, with all its struggles in adversity,
its courage and hope.
Give us in our diversity tolerance and respect for each other
and a passionate commitment to justice for all.
Bless us so that we might be a blessing to others.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Liturgy: via PowerPoint + APBA Colour – Green
Readings: Deuteronomy 18.15-20; Psalm 111; 1 Corinthians 8.1-13; Mark 1.21-28
We acknowledge and pay our respects to the Wanggeriburra people of the Yugambeh language region, the traditional owners and ongoing custodians of the land on which we gather, and to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people worshipping with us today.
A note from Helen
The Deuteronomy reading this week raises a difficult, but urgent question. How can we know when a message has (not!) been spoken by the Lord? History shows us crusades, genocide, forced conversions, holy wars, witch hunts, suicide bombings, apartheid, and lots more, all justified and sanctioned by the church, and claiming God’s support. So, we ask again, how can we know? We have to ‘test the spirits’, (1 John 4:1). A false prophet is characterised by presumption, degradation, dehumanisation and detestable practices. The true prophet is marked by circumspection and compassion, and fosters human health and wholeness. There is a cacophony of voices (religious and otherwise) out there, and hearing what God is saying to us demands that we distinguish between the signal and the noise. We must test the spirits.

January Retiring Collection: School Chaplaincy
The School Chaplaincy committee has a relief fund called the Dorothy Fund named after Dorothy Robert who worked tirelessly for many years to help the needy in the school communities. Please give generously to that fund. As the new year starts up after a typhoon and many storms and major flooding, and no power and considerable hardship, there will be families doing it hard. We already know that our Chappys are going to be doing a lot of listening and caring and will need lots of coffee and treats to make these times more relaxed.
