Sentence for the Day

It is the God who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. 2 Corinthians 4.6

Collect of the Day

Almighty God,

whose Son was revealed in majesty

before he suffered death upon the cross:

give us faith to perceive his glory,

that being strengthened by his grace

we may be changed into his likeness,

from glory to glory;

through the same Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God,

now and for ever. Amen.

Liturgy:  via PowerPoint + APBA   Colour – White

Readings:  2 Kings 2.1-12; Psalm 50.1-6; 2 Corinthians 4.3-12; Mark 9.2-9

We acknowledge and pay our respects to the Wanggeriburra people of the Yugambeh language region, the traditional owners and ongoing custodians of the land on which we gather, and to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people worshipping with us today.

A note from Helen

Elijah, in today’s reading is journeying to meet ‘face to face’ with God. And unlike all the rest of us, he will not die but ‘go to the light’, encountering and being embraced by the wisdom and energy of God.  Elisha wants to go with his teacher and, against the wishes of Elijah, he follows his mentor and teacher on his path to immortality.  Finally, they must part and when Elijah asks Elisha what gift he would like to receive, he asks for a ‘double portion’ of his mentor’s spirit.  He does not ask for wealth or power, but spiritual insight and energy. Are we able to imitate this request, not asking for ‘mundane’ things, for ‘worldly things’, but for ‘great things’ – revelations of God’s spirit and energy to transform the world. Paul speaks of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.  Jesus is the revelation of God’s deepest nature and the deepest nature of the universe. But our ‘human’ vision prevents us from seeing the infinity of all things. God’s glory is ‘veiled’ by our failure to look into life deeply.  We are often content to just see the superficial rather than the inner life and light of all things. The glory of God is ethical in nature, Jesus Christ is our model of spiritual formation. Jesus mediates his divinity with the humanity of those around him and we are called to mediate our humanity with the divinity in all things.

Intercessionsprepared by Jan

As we reflect on the miraculous transfiguration of Jesus, may we be transformed into what you, our loving and all powerful God would have us to be. Help us to commit ourselves to love you completely and to daily show your love to others.

Heavenly Father, guide us and let us live according to your will.

Holy God, who created our Earth and entire universe, we thank you for the greening of our land through recent rains. Help us to care for your world, to conserve resources and work as a worldwide community to care for and respect all life.

Heavenly Father, guide us and let us live according to your will.

Almighty God, we pray for all those in positions of authority. May the leaders of all nations look to fulfill your purpose and will. Guide all those in leadership in your church. We pray for Archbishop Jeremy, Bishop John and Reverend Helen. We thank you for the ministry of John Corner and Allan Paulsen. May all those in leadership in our local parish, as part of the worldwide Anglican Community reflect your love and sacrifice.

Heavenly Father, guide us and let us live according to your will.

Loving God, we thank you for all who care for the sick or elderly, as they minister to those in their care. We pray for healing for those known personally to us who we name aloud or in the silence of our hearts……………………….

Heavenly Father, guide us and let us live according to your will.

Eternal God, help us to be like Elisha trusting in your promises. We thank you for each of our loved ones who have gone before us. You have promised to love and comfort us in our time of grief. Help us to show your love to those who grieve. Especially we remember those whose Year’s Mind occurs at this time.

Heavenly Father, guide us and let us live according to your will.

Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers. Grant that what we have asked in faith, we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen
