Sentence for the Day

The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news. Mark 1.15

Collect of the Day

God of the new and eternal covenant,

as the forty days of the great flood

swept away the world’s corruption

and watered new beginnings of righteousness and life:

grant to us, who are washed clean and born again

in the saving flood of baptism, the wellspring of your grace,

that your gift of new life may flourish once again;

through Jesus Christ our Redeemer,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Liturgy: via PowerPoint + APBA Colour – Purple

Readings:  Genesis 9.8-17; Psalm 25.1-10; 1 Peter 3.18-22; Mark 1.9-15

We acknowledge and pay our respects to the Wanggeriburra people of the Yugambeh language region, the traditional owners and ongoing custodians of the land on which we gather, and to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people worshipping with us today.

A note from Helen

You may have had someone ask you, or maybe you have asked the question yourself – ‘Why does God allow bad things to happen’, ‘Why does God allow evil to survive in the world’.  Well, our first reading this morning gives us that answer.  After the flood, after God had wiped all life off the face of the earth (except for Noah’s family and the two animals of every type in the boat), God made a covenant with the world.  God promised to never again do that, and the rainbow (the bow in the sky) is a reminder to us of that covenant.  But the covenant is not just with humankind, the covenant is with all animal and plant life as well.  And yes, evil remains in the world, the flood did not wipe it out because it lived on in Noah’s family.  But God is not willing to again wipe out humanity, or any other life form, just to rid the world of human violence and corruption.  The flood story demonstrates why God will never do it again, and the covenant declares unequivocally that God will never again do that.

For Peace

God of the Nations, whose sovereign reign brings justice and peace, have mercy on our divided world, shed abroad your peace in the hearts of all, that all races and peoples may learn to live as members of one family, and in obedience to your law, through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen

For Good Government

Spirit of justice and truth, grant to our governments and all who serve in public life wisdom and skill, imagination and energy. Protect them from corruption and the temptation of self-serving. Help us to commit ourselves to the common good, that our land may be a secure home for all its peoples, through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen

For the poor and neglected.

God of mercy and pity, remember the homeless, the destitute, the sick, the aged and all who have no-one to care for them. Heal those who are broken in body or spirit and turn their sorrow into joy. Particularly today we pray for........

Help us to minister to their needs, for the love of your Son, who for our sake became poor, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

For the Church

Most gracious Father, we pray for your holy catholic Church, fill it with all truth, and in all truth with all peace. Where it is corrupt, purge it, where it is in error direct it, where anything is amiss, reform it, where it is right, strengthen and confirm it. Where it is in want, furnish it, where it is divided, heal it and unite it in your love, through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen

In a moment of silence, let us remember with thanks all those who have been influential in our lives but are no longer with us.

Let us say together this grace,

Go before us O Lord, in all our doings with your most gracious favour, and assist us with your continual help, that in all works begun, continued and ended in you we may glorify your holy name and finally by your mercy obtain everlasting life, thorough Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen

Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers, Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
