Sentence for the Day

Jesus said, “If you wish to come after me, you must deny your very self, take up your cross and follow in my footsteps. If you would save your life, you’ll lose it, but if you lose your life for my sake, you’ll save it.” Mark 8:34-35

Collect of the Day

God of teamwork and co-creation,

You need no help but choose to work through us.

Give us grace each day to grasp

The hand of fellowship you offer,

And in the power of your Spirit,

To work with you to restore, renew

And bless the world you love. Amen.

Liturgy: via PowerPoint + APBA Colour – Purple

Readings:

Genesis 17.1-7, 15-16; Psalm 22.24-32; Romans 4.13-25; Mark 8.31-38

We acknowledge and pay our respects to the Wanggeriburra people of the Yugambeh language region, the traditional owners and ongoing custodians of the land on which we gather, and to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people worshipping with us today.

A note from Helen

God made an everlasting covenant with Abraham when he called him to travel to unknown lands; that he would be the ‘father of great nations’; that it would be Abraham’s direct descendants, not relatives, who would inherit these promises. And today we hear God’s promise that despite their advanced age, Abraham and Sarah (note their new names) would become the parents of a son, and through this son many nations will emerge. God initiates a covenant with humankind that involves an ongoing call and response, and it is humankind’s response that shapes God’s future calls. For Abraham and Sarah, the covenant is about family immortality. Sarah will become the mother, and Abraham the father, of great nations, they may be fallible, but they are open to God’s promises and creativity moving through their lives. They will become the parents of the ‘children of Israel’, and all the ‘Abrahamic faith traditions’ come from them. And like children in a family, the Abrahamic faiths (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam) have their own unique perspectives and developmental maturity, but above all else, they are siblings, who can live in harmony and share in God’s dream of Shalom for all people.

Intercessionsprepared by Keith Slater

God of promise and hope, we bring to you our prayers this day.

We pray for this world: for an end to violence and hatred, an end to people trafficking, and an end to greed; for a generosity of hearts and minds in matters of policy and government; and for our leaders in leading and wise decision-making.

God of hope, in your mercy: hear our prayer.

We pray for the church: for Jeremy (Archbishop), John (Regional Bishop) and Helen (our Parish Priest), for all who serve our faith communities on Parish Council; for love and compassion to be shared and gospel lived among us.

God of hope, in your mercy: hear our prayer.

We pray for the communities of Canungra and Tamborine Mountain: continuing to pray for those who have been affected by recent natural events; for love to be demonstrated and generated in shared community life.

God of hope, in your mercy: hear our prayer.

We pray for those in need at this time: for those who are hungry; those who are lonely and forgotten; for those who ask for prayer at this time ……;  and for those who are dying and those who watch with them.

God of hope, in your mercy: hear our prayer.

We hold in our prayer those who have died: we pray for those whose year’s mind occurs at this time; we give thanks for all who have believed and received your promises; for those who have gone before into your heavenly presence.

God of hope, in your mercy: hear our prayer.

Accept our prayer through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
