Sentence for the Day

In this is love, not that we loved God but that God loved us. Beloved, since God loved us so much, we also ought to love one another.

1 John 4.10–11

Collect of the Day

O God,

form the minds of your faithful people,

that we may love what you command

and desire what you promise,

so that, amid the many changes of this world,

our hearts may there be fixed where true joys are to be found;

through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Liturgy: via PowerPoint + APBA Colour – White

Readings: Acts 8.26-40; Psalm 22.26-32; 1 John 4.7-21; John 15.1-8

We acknowledge and pay our respects to the Wanggeriburra people of the Yugambeh language region, the traditional owners and ongoing custodians of the land on which we gather, and to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people worshipping with us today.

Intercessionsprepared by Peta Tierney

We rejoice and give thanks to you our heavenly Father for the gift of our saviour and risen Lord, Jesus Christ. We stumble in living lives according to your will, but we are precious in your sight and trust in you. Guide us in our actions and choices.

Heavenly Father, hear our prayer.

We rejoice and give thanks to you our heavenly Father for your gift of the world. We pray for peace and tolerance in place of war and brutality; we pray especially for peace in Gaza and Ukraine. We pray for clean water and arable land, and the just share of the earth’s resources for all peoples to live with human dignity. We pray for those living in fear, grinding poverty or slavery.

Heavenly Father, hear our prayer.

Your church in this place and around the world celebrates your son Jesus Christ rising to new life. We give thanks to you our heavenly Father for your gift of your church, for church leaders, for your servants Jeremy, John and Helen, and for all in this place who use their time and talents to honour and serve you.

Heavenly Father, hear our prayer.

We rejoice and give thanks to you our heavenly Father for your gift of our safe communities and neighbourhoods in Australia, for good healthcare, for the abundance we all share. We pray for those who are marginalised from this abundance, those who are in pain, chronically ill, or dying. We pray especially for…. and for any others known to us whom we name aloud or in the silence of our hearts….

Heavenly Father, hear our prayer.

We rejoice and give thanks to you our heavenly Father for your gift of everlasting life. We remember all the saints who lived and died in your name especially your servants George and Mark, and our loved ones who have gone before us to be with you for eternity. We remember those whose year’s mind occurs at this time.

Heavenly father, hear the prayers we bring before you and guide us as we follow you.

A note from Helen

There is a well-known motto which tells us ‘God is still speaking’. Our Scriptures have always spoken and continue to speak to us in many different ways. Every time we hear a passage from Scripture, it is possible to ‘hear’ a different message. When Phillip encountered the Ethiopian on the road, he was reading a passage from the prophet Isaiah, but he did not really understand what he was reading. Phillip is invited to join him as he travelled and as Phillip expanded the passage for the Ethiopian, he did so by being led by the questions asked of him. He did not give him a ‘set script’, but instead allowed the questions to guide the teaching he provided. And when the Ethiopian asked to be baptised, he did not allow racial or sexual barriers to prevent him from responding to this request. Historically, eunuchs were looked down upon and yet, Phillip shows us that, in God’s eschatological dream even eunuchs will find a home in God’s realm of Shalom. Today, we are still living that dream, we can be the first fruits of its realisation. This encounter gives us a vision of relational evangelism where we receive as well as give and let those we encounter shape our sharing of the good news. We all have a story to tell, but that story needs to be shaped by the questions, values and experiences of those with whom we interact. Revelation is always relative to the receiver. Good news is always spoken personally and concretely, rather than abstractly and uniformly.
