Collect

Almighty God,

you sent your Holy Spirit

to be the life and light of your Church:

open our hearts to the riches of your grace,

that we may bring forth the fruit of the Spirit

in love, joy, and peace;

through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever. Amen.

We acknowledge and pay our respects to the Wanggeriburra people of the Yugambeh language region, the traditional owners and ongoing custodians of the land on which we gather, and to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people worshipping with us today.

Intercessionsprepared by Anne King

Together we pray that the Holy Spirit will fill our hearts. We humbly ask Our Loving Father to help us receive his Spirit and renew Hope, Love and Joy on earth.

We pray for the Church that at this time we may be renewed by the gifts of the Holy Spirit. May we reach out to one another as true disciples with gospel joy, love and hope.

Lord in your love. Send us your Spirit.

Your Holy Spirit gave your apostles the gift and power of forgiveness. Grant us that gift so that we may we use it to heal a broken world.

Lord in your love. Send us your Spirit.

We pray for all those who fear for their lives, for the victims of violence and war, for those in poverty and for those weighed down by sickness, troubles and anxieties. We pray that we may reach out to them with love, hope and compassion.

Lord in your love. Send us your Spirit.

Father send us your Spirit of truth. That we may become your messengers, proclaiming your Love and Hope to those who have none. We give thanks for your gift of your church, for church leaders, for your servants Jeremy, John and Helen, and for all in this place who use their time and talents to honour and serve you.

Lord in your love. Send us your Spirit.

Let us pray for all who are sick and for all who are in hospital that they may be aware that the Lord is with them in their troubles. We especially pray for any known to us whom we name aloud or in the silence of our hearts.

Lord in your love. Send us your Spirit.

Let us pray to the living God who raised Jesus from the dead. Father, raise up the faithful departed and let us all come with them into the glory of heaven.  We remember those whose year’s mind occurs at this time…………

Lord in your love. Send us your Spirit.

In the silence of our hearts, let us pray for our own families and friends…….

Almighty and ever-living God, we give thanks for the graces and gifts of the Holy Spirit. Help us to use all your gifts wisely as true witnesses to your Love; we ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN.

A note from Helen

The word “Pentecost” comes from the Greek ‘pentekostos’, meaning ‘fiftieth’, from which one of the most important feasts in the Jewish calendar derives its name. Fifty days after Passover the Jews celebrated the ‘Feast of Harvest’ or ‘Feast of Weeks’. Many centuries later, after their exile to Babylon, Pentecost became one the great pilgrimage feasts in Judaism, it was a time for the Diaspora Jews to return to Jerusalem for worship.  And since around the second century, Christians have celebrated the coming of the Holy Spirit fifty days after the death and resurrection of Jesus, on the Jewish feast of Pentecost, and with the Spirit’s descent, the birth of the church. Pentecost marks the most important celebration of the Christian calendar after Christmas and Easter.

May Retiring Collection: Mercy Ships

Every day, children and adults in some of the poorest communities die from causes that can easily be treated in hospitals in nations like Australia. Mercy Ships are able to deploy their state-of-the-art hospital ships to treat people. They also train and upskill local healthcare workers so that their great work continues into the future. Up to 70% of the world’s population lives near the coast, and their hospital ships are unique platforms to direct medical care and build medical capacity into these communities.
