NEIGHBOURLY LOVE

The photo on the front page shows part of the offering of local produce that the St. George’s congregation brought to our morning service last Sunday. As part of ‘Eat Local Week’ this food was donated to the Salvation Army for distribution to those in need within our community. This was a lovely way in which we could show love to our neighbours.

Showing love to our neighbours is the main message of church this Sunday as the gospel reading features the parable of The Good Samaritan.

That was a parable Jesus told in response to an expert in the law.

That expert knew that the two greatest commandments were: “‘Love the Lord your God … and ‘Love your neighbour.’

Essentially: Love God and love people. However, this lawyer was looking for a legal-loophole which meant he was OK to continue not showing love to all people: He wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbour?”

The parable of The Good Samaritan should speak to all of us. There are plenty of times when we’ve looked the other way, walked on by, and not been a ‘neighbour’. We’ve all known people who need an ally: Maybe a kid bullied at your school, maybe a gay couple ostracized from your church, maybe a Muslim being intimidated on your bus. We could have been a neighbour, put an arm around them and helped but we didn’t. We looked for the loophole of protecting our own social-status, or the loophole of some contested Bible verse, or the loophole of our fear of being attacked too. The fact that Jesus tells this parable as a response to this lawyer show us there’s never a get-out clause. If we’re following Jesus then we have to be a neighbour to every single person.

Coffee in Canungra

Tuesday  12th July 2022, 10.00am, Bean In, Canungra, all welcome.

This week’s intercessions: Prepared by John N

This is the day that the Lord has made.....Let us rejoice and be glad in it.

Let us first thank God for this wonderful world in which we live, for the heavens above and the earth beneath, for all the beauty we see around us, and all for all the living creatures which share this world with us. May we always be mindful that we are but custodians of God’s creation for all who will come after us, and that we must care and preserve its resources for them.

Lord, in your mercy......hear our prayer.

As we look around the world today, let us thank God for the peace and prosperity in which we live here in Australia. We pray for all who live in countries where there is war and civil strife, particularly in Ukraine. We pray for all who have lost their homes, their families and possessions, and who have been forced to seek refuge in foreign countries, where they may not always be welcome. We pray for all those who work to provide relief and shelter to people who have lost everything,

Lord, in your mercy......hear our prayer.

We pray for the worldwide Anglican Communion of which we are members and particularly for its leaders as they seek to spread the Gospel in increasingly secular and uncaring surroundings. We pray for our Archbishop Philip, our regional bishop John and our priest Tom as they seek to find new ways of bringing in those who may have lost their faith, or have strayed away like lost sheep from the care which our church can provide.

Lord, in your mercy......hear our prayer.

We pray for all who have been affected by recent natural disasters, floods, landslides and storms, particularly in NSW and Bangladesh. We pray for the right use of all the donations which have been given to relief agencies, that it may be distributed carefully to those most in need. Lord, in your mercy......hear our prayer.

We pray for all those in our local communities on the Mountain and around Canungra who provide us with all that we need, particularly those in the Emergency services. We pray for schools, teachers and students, that they may be taught wisdom and discernment, as well as knowledge, in what they learn.

Lord, in your mercy......hear our prayer.

We thank God for our health and strength and pray for all those who, through illness, accident or infirmity can no longer live the lives to which they have been accustomed. Particularly we pray for................ and any others who are known to us who need our prayers at this time.  Lord, in your mercy......hear our prayer.

We give thanks for the lives of those whom we have known  but are no longer with us.

Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers ...Grant that what we have asked in faith, we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord,

Religious Education Books for Canungra State School

Students of Canungra State School have the privilege of receiving Religious Instruction once a week. Each student receives two workbooks for the year which are used during lesson time. The teachers also receive a Teachers Manual. Thus, we have an outlay of around $1000 per year. Religious Instruction is an important ministry as this is the only time the kids get to hear he Word of God. Please help this worthy cause. (We are also still looking for an instructor as some classes are currently missing out)
