This Sunday is Commitment Sunday in our churches. We shall think about how we might take the gifts that we’ve been given by God and commit to using them for God in the next 12 months.

There are two aspects to how we use the gifts we have: One of them is financial – what we choose to do with our Earthly stuff. The other is spiritual – what we choose to do with the gifts God has given us (gifts like our time or our talents.)

As members of a congregation this is worth our consideration because, to use financial language, when it comes to church all members of any congregation are either consumers or investors. You either sit there and receive or you invest your time, gifts and finances.

Some people bemoan a consumer culture in church, by that I mean the people who come in and just want to sit and receive and not get involved. I don’t think they should because I don’t think that’s always wrong. This Sunday we will be looking at a passage from John 6 where Jesus has just fed the 5000. There is definitely a Biblical precedent that says it’s OK for thousands of people to sit down and just consume what Jesus offers. There are seasons in most peoples lives where you need to take time out and just receive from Jesus. However, that story also shows us there is a time to give too: Those 5000 people only received because somebody in the crowd offered all that he had, and also because the disciples offered themselves to distribute it.

Commitment Sunday is an opportunity for us to give thanks for the gifts we’ve received but also to commit to what gifts we may be able to offer the church.

Religious Education Books for Canungra State School

Each year the parish provides religeous instruction books for the students of Canungra State school at a cost of around $1,000.  This is partly paid for by the St Luke's Containers for Cash scheme but there will be a shortfall this year.  Please help this worthy cause.

This week’s intercessions: Prepared by Keith

Gracious God, we thank you for the gift of your generous hospitality in Christ Jesus who did not count the cost. Empower our lives to share your love in reaching out to all whom we meet.

For all you give: thank you, generous God.

Gracious God, we thank you for your Church throughout the world; for Justin, Archbishop of Canterbury; for Philip, our Archbishop; John, our Bishop and Tom, our parish priest, and for all who bear witness to the Good News of Jesus.

For all you give: thank you, generous God.

Gracious God, we give you thanks for your amazing creation and for the provision of our needs. Give us generosity in the sharing of our goods, the living of just lives, the recognition of the integrity of each other, and our living together in peace and harmony.

For all you give: thank you, generous God.

Gracious God, we offer our thanks for the communities in which we live and in which we seek to generously share your love.

For all you give: thank you, generous God.

Gracious God, mindful of your boundless and generous love we make our financial commitment to you and your ministry in this Parish and community:

(There will be an extended pause during which music can be quietly played. We are invited to prayerfully complete our Commitment Card – separate the two sections and place them both in the offering basket before the altar.)

Gracious God, in this commitment we make the offering of ourselves to you.

For all you give: thank you, generous God.

Compassionate God, we hold before you today all those who are in need, those whom we know and whom we name aloud or in the silence of our hearts.

For all you give: thank you, generous God.

Eternal God, we give thanks for all who have gone before us and who have washed the feet of others offering themselves to you in your love.

Generous God: we offer ourselves afresh to you this day, through Jesus Christ our Lord, and empowered by the Holy Spirit. Amen
