LAUREL YOUNGMAN

It is with sadness that I have to report that our organist at St. George’s, Laurel Youngman, died on Thursday morning. Details of her funeral will be announced very soon.

Many of you will know that she recently went into hospital and was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Whilst the time-scale is very short, there is maybe a blessing to be seen in that. In fact, it was only a couple of weeks ago that Laurel played the organ when Bishop John came to visit.

Whilst there is real sadness, there is also joy in a moment like this when somebody with faith comes to the end of their life.

This is the hope of resurrection that we talk about in church every Sunday. When somebody dies in Christ we believe those words turn to action.

1 Corinthians 15 says: all will be made alive in Christ …then the saying that is written will be fulfilled:

‘Death has been swallowed up in victory.’
‘Where, O death, is your victory?
Where, O death, is your sting?’

I visited Laurel on Monday and we shared the eucharist together; She said the words of the confession, received the absolution, declared what she believed in the words of the creed, and received the sacrament. She was ready to meet the God she had faith in.

There is obvious sadness and sense of loss amongst our church community but there should be a sense of joy too because Laurel maintained faith in our Lord all the way to the end of her life.

Individually, each one of us can be inspired, and aspire to maintain that same faith.

Collectively, because of our hope founded in the resurrection to eternal life, we can say: ‘Where, O death, is your victory?  Where, O death, is your sting?’

This week’s intercessions: Prepared by Barbara

We praise you O God, we acknowledge you to be the Lord. Hear our prayer.

Merciful God, your love for this world you created for us to live in is evident as seasons change and we reap the benefit. The fierceness of weather extremes bring danger and fear but You are in the fear and danger with us if only we believe and that faith keeps us going. We thank you for the people of Ukraine who show us their courage and pray for the people of Pakistan, India and devastated regions here in Australia.

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Loving God, our many churches are one in Christ. We pray for our priests and deacons and lay ministers as they seek to serve you as best they can. We pray for our Archbishop Phillip as he retires; for Bishop John, for Tom, our priest, and his family, we give grateful thanks, and all retired clergy who work as locums. We pray and give thanks for our Children's ministry and Rev. John, seeking to bring little ones to Jesus and for Rev. Tom providing opportunities for young and old  to worship you, at the 4pm service.

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Creator God, in our communities on the mountain and at Canungra we give thanks for SES, Police, Firies and all service clubs who give support when needed in different ways. We give thanks for farmers and Landcare staff and all those who look after our natural environment. We pray for our local schools, RE teachers and children, that they come to know your loving presence within and around them.

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Gracious God, we pray for all who are sick and suffering from virus's, long term conditions or terminal ones. We pray for healing of body and mind and as we feel your gentle touch. We pray especially for ................(those) who have asked for our prayers, named aloud or in the silence of our hearts…………

Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Eternal God, we give grateful thanks for the life of Laurel Youngman who passed into eternal life on Thursday morning. Laurel dedicated many hours of her time, talents and money to the worship of our church and on many other occasions in our community. We thank you for her faith and for the knowledge that she was at peace. We give thanks for the life of Ryan Jelfs and others who we have lost and we pray for comfort for those who mourn for them.

Almighty God you have promised to hear our prayers. Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
