BREAD FOR THE WILDERNESS
I have been away this week for a clergy conference at Noosa Heads.
The theme for the conference was ‘Bread for the Wilderness.’ The talks were all based around how we can be nourished in times of ‘wilderness’ and by that term they meant times when we feel lost, when life is especially tough or maybe even when God seems far away.
We spoke about how God’s words in the Bible can provide nourishment in those times and how, when tempted in the wilderness, Jesus said: “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God” and we looked at passages where this metaphor of scripture as nourishment is stretched to bizarre limits, e.g. Ezekiel 3:3: “Then he said to me, “…Eat this scroll I am giving you and fill your stomach with it.” So I ate it, and it tasted as sweet as honey.”
The Bible can provide nourishment, so can church services, but they are not the only way that God can nourish us because God is everywhere, not just within the pages of the Bible or the four walls of the church.
The timetable for the week in Noosa was fairly packed and between sessions I had to prepare for this Sunday’s services, prepare for a funeral and write this notice-sheet. However, I also took time out to visit the beach (pictured on the front cover) and went surfing. I got to paddle for an hour in the sea (the great wet-wilderness) and it was so good for me, I experience our creator out in creation and this was a time where God nourished me.
We are all nourished in different ways and it’s important to explore what works for you so that when times of wilderness come along you know how to access your ‘bread.’

NOTICES…
Archbishop’s Resignation
This week the Most Revd Phillip Aspinall has announced that after 21 years as the Archbishop of Brisbane he is resigning from this role. His final duties will be at ordinations on December 3rd. We pray for him this week, we pray for his future plans and we pray for wisdom and discernment for those who will appoint his successor.
Telling a Story (remember last week’s sermon?)
This week’s Compass Program on the ABC at 6pm Sunday 4 September focuses on the journey of a young Rohingya refugee who arrived in Australia by boat as a fifteen-year-old and follows his path in establishing himself through the unexpected world of body building. Our common humanity is portrayed through his pursuit of a life free from the persecution of his people by the governments of Myanmar
This week’s intercessions: Prepared by Peta
We give thanks to you, our God, who hears the prayers of our hearts.
We give you thanks for the Earth and it’s bounty which sustains us. Amongst severe climate events and change, we pray for the future of the Earth and it’s ability to sustain the lives of all who populate it. Forgive us our reckless greed, disregard and unwillingness to be good stewards of your earthly gifts.
We give thanks to you, our God, who hears the prayers of our hearts.
We pray for those in the parts of the world experiencing devastating climate events and climate change. We pray for those whose lives have been devastated by floods in Pakistan. We pray for those on our east coast waiting to see what the wet Spring will bring. We so often pray to you for relief from drought, but floods also bring pain and loss.
We give thanks to you, our God, who hears our prayers.
We give you thanks for all your servants and for all who serve humanity and our community in your name. We give thanks for our priests Tom, John and Allan, and for our local school chaplains.
We give thanks to you, our God, who hears our prayers.
We give you thanks for family, friends and neighbours, near and far. We pray for those in need of comfort or support. We ask your blessing on …. and others known to us whom we name aloud or in the silence of our hearts…..
We give thanks to you, our God, who hears our prayers.
We remember with thanks your servants in every age who have gone before us and those whose Years Mind occurs at this time. We bring before you the WWII New Guinea missionary martyrs from this Diocese…
We give thanks to you, our God, who hears the prayers of our hearts. Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
