LOST COINS
The picture on the front is of some chocolate coins. They featured prominently in last Sunday’s 4pm service because in last Sunday’ gospel reading from Luke 15 Jesus tells a trilogy of parables. You’re all very familiar with the first and third legs: The parable of the lost sheep has been the go-to Bible story for every youth minister or Sunday school teacher since the day after Jesus first told it whilst the parable of the prodigal son is a blockbuster of a sermon. In between them is the parable of the lost coin and whilst some may see it as the disappointing second film in the trilogy, I think it’s invaluable! At the start of chapter 15 we read that Jesus is addressing a huge crowd and the sight of a multitude of people is presumably what inspired this trilogy. Just three chapters back Jesus said: “Where your treasure is, there your heart shall be also” (Luke 12:34)
The parable of the lost coin tells us that God’s heart is for every single person in the crowd.
This story is about a woman who loses a coin and Jesus is saying you are like a coin: You’d think it wouldn’t matter too much if one was lost amongst billions around the world, but this story is of a committed search for that lost coin.
Then the last verse tells us how much it means if just one person finds God.
We see the words ‘Rejoice!’ and ‘Joy!’ It’s party-time in heaven amongst the angels when just one person turns back to God.
We all have people who are valuable to us, this story tells us they are even more valuable to God. We all know people who, like the coin, have wandered away from God’s hands, and whilst it’s important that we direct them back, this story reassures us that God will never stop searching for them.

This week’s intercessions: Prepared by Peta
The day you gave us, Lord, is ended,
The darkness falls at your behest..
This week we felt the loss of our sovereign Elizabeth and our friend Laurel. We know they are with you; we know you keep a place with you for each of us when our days on earth are ended. Comfort us in our sorrow at losing loved ones; be with all who mourn. We bring before you those whose year’s mind occurs this month. We remember the Apostle Matthew.
To you our morning hymns ascended,
Your praise shall sanctify our rest
We praise you for the beauty of each day, for all the wonders of our world and for your goodness to us. We thank you for clean water and healthy food, for medical care, and for justice and security. We bring before all those who can’t access these things and who live in misery and despair. We pray for those caught up in war, and for refugees seeking a peaceful life. Help us to make a difference to the lives of others.
To you our morning hymns ascended,
Your praise shall sanctify our rest.
We praise you in your church across the world, and we thank you for your servants in this Diocese and parish. We pray for our priests Tom, Allan and John, and we pray for King Charles as he takes up his responsibilities in the worldwide Anglican Communion. We pray for our Parish Council as it meets today.
The day you gave us, Lord, is ended,
The darkness falls at your behest..
We pray for those who have asked for our prayers…and for any others known to us, whom we name aloud or in the silence of our hearts, those who are in sorrow, sickness or any other need..
To you our morning hymns ascended,
Your praise shall sanctify our rest. Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
