TRINITY SUNDAY

The other day I wandered into St George’s church to sit down, pray and have a conversation with God. When I got there, I found that somebody had beaten me to it! A praying mantis was sat on the lectern, turned towards the cross and in a perfect praying position. My prayers had to wait a moment so that I could take the photo that’s on the front of this notice sheet (and then carefully and humanely relocate him to start a new prayer meeting in the trees outside!)

He sets the example for what I’m going to suggest we need to do more of this Sunday though - The Church designates this Sunday as ‘Trinity Sunday.’ Now let’s be honest, we don’t fully understand the Trinity, the reason why God exists in more than one form is hard to understand and even harder to explain.

I could spend a lot of time and effort preaching this Sunday and trying to make a logical case for how the Trinity works and how a trinitarian God is necessary but I would inevitably fail to some degree because the Trinity is a mystery and we can’t package it into something that’s easy to understand and talk about.

The best way to get the Trinity is to experience it.

One of the best ways to do that is to do what our mantis did. Come to church and pray.

At our 4pm service I am going to be leading us as we pray creatively to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, in three sections of our service. If you are able to join us please do, if not then make some time this week to turn to God like our mantis did and have a conversation or three.

NOTICES…

4pm Hospitality

It has been a joy for the last few weeks after our 4pm service to be able to share in a time of tea + coffee + fellowship (+cake!) together.

In order to continue doing this we do need people to volunteer to lead this so if you feel able to help, however frequently or infrequently, then please do sign up this Sunday.

Mainly Music

Mainly Music is a group for preschool age children and their and carers,  meeting on Wednesday’s from 9.30am at St George’s. To continue running this group we need more help. If you are able to volunteer to help with this group please contact Tom

This week’s intercessions: Prepared by David

God of love, Give us peace.

Christ Jesus, before ascending into heaven, you promised to send the Holy Spirit to your apostles and disciples. Grant the same Spirit may be in our life, in the work of your grace and love. With you and, with courage, may we overcome the obstacles that interfere with our salvation; Teach us to be your faithful disciples.

Heavenly Father, show us what our purpose is, and let us live according to your will.

Trusting in you Heavenly Father, we join one another as a community, a community of faith on a journey. A journey to grow ever deeper in our faith. Along the way, remind us of your love, of your sacrifice for us, of your ever-mindful presence.

For it is in your strength and love we can go out and share your love and faith with all those in our community.

Heavenly Father, show us what our purpose is, and let us live according to your will.

We hold before you those who are homeless and cold, especially in this winter weather. Draw near and comfort them in spirit and bless those who work to provide them with shelter, food, and friendship. Please accept the prayers of your people in the multitude of your mercies and look with compassion upon all who turn to you for help.

Heavenly Father, show us what our purpose is, and let us live according to your will.

In your hands, Heavenly Father, we humbly entrust our brothers and sisters who have left this mortal world. In this life, you embraced them with your tender love, deliver them now from every evil and bid them eternal rest.

Welcome them into paradise where there will be no sorrow, no weeping or pain but fullness of peace and joy with your son and the Holy Spirit forever.

Heavenly Father, show us what our purpose is, and let us live according to your will.

Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers, Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
