FIRED UP!
The Church celebrates Pentecost this Sunday. The first Pentecost is recorded in Acts 2: A group of followers had met to pray and just be together in a room - Then the Holy Spirit showed up!
The Holy Spirit had two miraculous effects:
The one everyone remembers was that all those present were able to speak in tongues, conveying the gospel to everyone from around the world.
The other effect of the Holy Spirit seems less useful - Tongues of fire appeared over each and every one of those people in that room. I don’t know if there was any practical use to that fire, I think the fire is supposed to be symbolic: Just as there were two effects of the Holy Spirit that day there are also two effects of fire:
The first effect of fire is to give off light. Without the light of God we can see our way through life but not very well. With the light of God we can confidently walk through life; we know which way we are going and are less likely to stumble if we follow the light of God throughout life.
The second effect of fire is to give off heat. Maybe this fire symbolises the fact that God wants to heat up your faith. Our faith can go cold, it can especially go cold if we wander away from other people and decide we don’t need church. The triune God (in the form of Jesus) tells us that “where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them” so it’s not surprising that the triune God (in the form of the Holy Spirit) shows up and heats up the faith of a group of followers who meet to pray and just be together in a room.

This week’s intercessions: Prepared by Barbara
Bountiful and generous God, together we are gathered here, your faithful friends. You provide for all living creatures on earth, not just our physical necessities but our spiritual needs also, through your son Jesus, and your Holy Spirit, from ages past and now present.
In this Reconciliation Week we give thanks for the First Nation People who cared for Mother Earth in your spirit of careful understanding for thousands of years. We acknowledge the Yugambeh people who lived and cared for this mountain which we enjoy so much today and the Indigenous people who lived around Canungra and the region of the Scenic Rim. Teach us to understand and learn their culture. Forgive us when we have behaved badly towards them. You give us life forever.
Holy Spirit of God sent to the faithful, we give you thanks and praise.
Creative loving God, you gave us language enabling us to communicate and understand each other. We thank you for the languages of the world and those who teach them. We give thanks for those who want to know different languages especially of First Nations People.
You care for us in so many ways.
Holy Spirit of God sent to the faithful, we give you thanks and praise.
Loving God, we give thanks for all who recognise your Holy Spirit within them and we pray for our Queen Elizabeth who is faithful and true to you in this her Jubilee. She shows us by her life's example of true faith to live in you, as you live in us. We pray for Archbishop Philip, and all priests and deacons, for Bishop John, Tom, John and Allan. We give thanks for them and pray for them in times of doubt. We pray especially for the faithful people of Ukraine giving thanks for their strength and courage.
Holy Spirit of God sent by Jesus and the Father, we give you thanks and praise.
Loving God, you gave your son Jesus power to heal the sick, the mentally ill, anyone in need who asked for help . We pray for the elderly and all who care for them and we give thanks for all medical and paramedical staff whose daily hard work brings help to so many. May new leaders in government, supervisors and managers make good decisions whenever necessary. May tired workers have the rest they need to carry on with so many world-wide still very ill. In our community we pray for those who have asked for our prayers as we name them out loud or in the quiet of your hearts.
.. ... Bless them all.
Holy Spirit of God sent by Jesus and the Father we give you thanks and praise.
May we know the presence of your Holy Spirit within us. Help us to point you to those we meet in our daily lives, as people before us who led us to you. And we pray for all souls of those who love you and now living life eternal.
May our prayers and meditations be pleasing to you for we rejoice in you Lord Jesus.
AMEN
