PRAYING DIFFERENTLY

The photo on the cover of today’s notice sheet comes from last Sunday’s 4pm service. At that service we do things a bit differently when it comes to worship and especially prayer. Last week it was Trinity Sunday, so everybody wrote out a prayer to God the Father, a prayer to God the Son, and a prayer to God the Holy Spirit. We then came up and laid our prayers down in the shape of a shamrock at the foot of the altar.

This Sunday we are trying something different in all three of our services: This coming Friday the worldwide church celebrates the feast day of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

The idea behind that is that we reflect on the loving heart of Jesus Christ. I will be speaking about that in all three of our services and then we will respond with prayers that may well be unfamiliar and unusual in a typical Anglican church.

I think that can be really helpful because each of us develops our own way of praying and sometimes we can become set in our ways. Changing our perspective on prayer can refresh our faith and even refresh our view of God.

In prayer we often hurl our requests up to God; Philip Yancey says this of prayer:

‘Most of the time I get the direction wrong. I start downstream with my own concerns and bring them to God… as if God did not already know… Instead, I should start upstream where the flow begins. When I shift direction, I realise that God already cares about my concerns… more than I do!’

Going a different direction can be helpful. Hopefully we may see things from God’s perspective as we anchor our prayers to the heart of Jesus this Sunday.

This week’s intercessions: Prepared by Jan

Creator God, we thank you for the seasons of our world as they allow for times of rest and refreshment for the Earth. We pray for all those seeking warmth during this winter season. Help us to show your love to all around us each day. May we daily take time to bask in the warmth of your love and thank you for providing for all our physical needs.

Loving Heavenly Father, hear our prayers, that we may share your love always.

Holy God, as Christians around Australia and the world gather today to sing your praises and be renewed in their faith may we support and care for one another. We pray for the worldwide Anglican Communion especially in areas of conflict and war. May those who are living through dark times feel your comforting presence. We pray for Archbishop Philip, Regional Bishop John and for Reverend Tom and his family.

Loving Heavenly Father, hear our prayers that we may share your love always.

Caring God, we thank you that as you listened to Elijah and gave him food for his body and soul, you listen to us always. Remind us to daily spend time listening to you and finding comfort in your presence. Strengthen our love for you as we rejoice in the freedom freely given by the sacrifice of your Son, Jesus Christ.  May we be like the bright light that stopped Saul in his tracks, as we reflect your love for all people.

Loving Heavenly Father, hear our prayers that we may share your love always.

Healing God, we pray for all who are unwell during this Winter time. May your healing hand be on them all as they seek your face. We thank you for all hospital staff who daily go above and beyond to care for those in need.

Loving Heavenly Father, hear our prayers that we may share your love always.

Loving God, we thank you for all those who lived their lives refecting your love and who are now dwelling with you for eternity. We especially remember those whose Year’s mind occurs at this time.

Loving Heavenly Father, hear our prayers that we may share your love always.

Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
