IN COMMUNION

OK, the photo on the front cover requires some explanation this week! Last Sunday at our 4pm service we played a game which I like to play around this time of year in church – Pumpkin Bowling! The premise is simple: The pumpkin has a cross drawn on it (it is the Jesus pumpkin.) The skittles are rolls of paper with the names of saints written on each (this allows for a terrible pun about saints being role models.) On Sunday we had four people bowling, the winner bowled a strike. But, of course, all four were winners cos they got to bowl in church! They touched the Jesus pumpkin and the Jesus pumpkin touched all the saints. So to conclude this ridiculous analogy: In church we talk about the communion of saints which is a connection that all Christians have, all Christians living and all Christians that have died. We’re connected because we’ve all been touched by Jesus.

This week a friend told me that their neighbour had said “We don’t do Halloween, it’s pagan and we’re Christians.” I told my friend that their neighbour was mistaken. The popular expressions of Halloween that we see today don’t really align with any religion at all, so many Christians avoid it, but it was traditionally a Christian festival. The word means All-Hallows Evening (the night before All-Saints day) and it can be useful for Christians to reflect on this day. Remembering that we who live today are not the only ones Jesus died for is vital. Remembering that there are saints, those role-models who have died having faithfully served Jesus, can be inspiring. Remembering that we are part of one communion of people who have been touched by Jesus helps us see that everything does not revolve around us.

Jesus connects all of us into one big family throughout the world and throughout time.

Archbishop’s 2022 November Appeal - Newton Theological College

Newton is the only college which trains people for priestly ministry in the Anglican Church in Papua New Guinea. It has made recent improvements to some of its buildings and expanded from its three-year course for ordinands to include a bridging course for those who have not completed the necessary Year 12 qualification to enter Newton College. Many of the students come from the highlands. Newton has also long had a vibrant training course for ordinands’

spouses and for the first time this year, men and women have been

studying alongside each other. But the College desperately needs funds to help it to keep operating and to ensure its operations meet new government standards for tertiary institutions.

A Christmas Gift to People in Outback Towns

It’s not too late to contribute to the cost of Christmas sweets to be sent to people in outback regional towns in Qld. A donation box is located on the entry table at St George’s.
