STAND UP
At our 4pm service we are in the middle of a series of services based on the Biblical book of Hebrews. Last week we looked at Hebrews 11, this week it’s the start of Hebrews 12. Those of you who attend our morning service aren’t quite there yet; We conclude our look at the Lord’s Prayer this week, but don’t worry, you’ll join in next week.
This Sunday though we have one of my all-time favourite passages:
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
As a runner I tend to preach on the first half of that passage, but the second half is just as important. It tells us that Jesus ‘sat down at the right hand of the throne of God’ (that’s why I’ve stuck a picture of a chair on the front cover.)
You sit down when a job is done. On the cross Jesus cried out ‘Tetelestai’ (It is done.) His work on the cross was complete and done for all.
But He also ‘sat down’ for another reason: So that we might stand up. As we sit in church this Sunday and study both the book of Hebrews and the Lord’s prayer we’ll hopefully be inspired to have faith in the work of Jesus, but also to stand up and be part of that work.

St Luke’s Recycling
At the recent review of the St Luke’s Mission Action Plan we added a new priority, in line with the fifth of the Anglican Marks of Mission, ‘to strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the life of the earth’. This goal is: Eliminate all plastic waste from St Luke’s by the end of 2022 and recycle all other waste where possible.
While the specific actions to achieve this goal have not yet been identified it was agreed that we would commence our recycling, particularly of soft plastics, immediately. The two websites with great information about recycling are: https://recyclingnearyou.com.au/arl and
This week’s intercessions: Prepared by Anne
Jesus, friend of all the world, you have compassion on all who come to you for help; hear the prayers we bring of your people.
Loving and merciful God, you offer your people redemption and fullness of life: we pray for your holy, catholic church, for all baptised into Christ.
We pray for the churches of Australia, for leaders, teachers and theologians, for the clergy and people of this parish.
We pray for charity and unity among all Christians, that together we may proclaim your gospel of love.
Your kingdom come; your will be done.
Loving and merciful God, you are good and forgiving, and you abound in steadfast love for your people: we pray for our community.
We pray for our families, our neighbours and our friends, for all whom we meet in our daily lives, for the hungry, the homeless and all without work.
We pray for a community that values and cares for all its members, that all may live in dignity and hope.
Loving God, help us daily to grow into your likeness,
Your kingdom come; your will be done
Loving and merciful god, you are filled with compassion for your people and in our troubles you hear our cries: we pray for all in need.
We pray for all who are lonely or sad, for those in grief or despair; for the sick and the dying and for all who care for them.
We pray for the courage in our own troubles and compassion and generosity, that we may respond to the needs of others.
Loving God, help us daily to grow into your likeness,
Your kingdom come; your will be done
Loving and merciful God, you deliver your people from death and promise us the joys of everlasting life; we pray for all who have died in your love.
Help us to love you above all else, that, united with all your saints, we may be raised to a joyful resurrection and live with you for ever.
Your kingdom come; your will be done
Almighty God, you have promised to hear the prayers.
Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
