MYSTERY BAG

As the front cover suggests, I went to The Ekka this week. There were rides, there were animals, but the most memorable thing was probably the food: Everywhere you looked there were people eating ‘Dagwood dogs’ – a battered sausage on a stick dipped in tomato sauce. What a fantastically unique Australian tradition with a great Aussie name I thought. Until I Googled it - It turns out that they originated in the USA in the 1930’s and are named after a character, Dagwood, in an US comic-strip (he owned a dog.)

Sorry! Still, the name is a great addition to the list of bizarre names for sausage products: ‘Bangers’ (so called because the high water-content means they’ll likely explode on frying), ‘Saveloy’ (a word derived from the Latin for brain, because ingredients often include pig brain) ‘Snag’ (another Aussie one right? Wrong, it’s Scottish) and my favourite one: ‘Bags of mystery’ (because what’s in them is a total mystery.)

Church services are also a ‘bag of mystery!’ Everywhere you go you’ll find that every church thinks that their way of doing things is the right way and you’ll find subtle differences to the ingredients of each service and the words used.

Last week we concluded our look at the Lord’s Prayer at our morning services by discussing the final few words of that prayers - Words used in our churches but not in most churches around the world.

In the ‘bag of mystery’ that is Church, you’ll find different words wherever you go, you’ll find different ingredients everywhere you go but the reason behind it all, the overall objective, is the same every time.

The objective of eating a dagwood dog (or a hot-dog or even a toad-in-the-hole) is to satisfy your hunger. The objective of church services is to satisfy the hunger we have to embrace the mystery of our relationship with God.

I pray that you get a taste for more of that this Sunday!

Keith’s Pilgrimage

“Over September/October I will be walking the Camino from St Jean Pied de Port to Santiago de Compostela (in Spain). This is an ancient pilgrimage track in Europe. If you would like to make a virtual pilgrimage/come with me in prayer, then please print your name and email address on the list at church. I will carry the list with me, and send an occasional update as I progress.

This week’s intercessions: Prepared by John N

This is the day that the Lord has made.......Let us rejoice and be glad in it.

We thank God for the wonderful world in which we live, for the heavens above and the earth beneath, and for all living creatures which share it with us. May we ever remember that we are but guardians of this world for all who will come after us, and that our duty is to preserve its beauty and resources for them in years to come.

Lord, in your mercy.......hear our prayer

We thank God for the Anglican Communion of which we are members, and we pray for its leaders throughout the world. Here in Australia, for our Archbishop Philip, our regional Bishop John, our priest Tom, and for all our parish councillors, as they meet later this morning. We pray for Christians in countries where they suffer persecution and discrimination because of their faith, that they may strengthened by God’s grace in their daily lives.

Lord, in your mercy.......hear our prayer.

We thank God for the peace and prosperity in which we live here in Australia and pray for all those parts of our world where there is conflict and civil strife, particularly in Ukraine. We remember all those who have lost loved ones, their homes and possessions and all their hopes for a fulfilling future. We pray for others who live under corrupt and incompetent governments, where there is no justice for minority groups, the media is controlled by the government, and for all who have been forced to leave their homes then try to seek refuge in distant lands where they may not be welcome. We pray for those who work to provide relief for them.

Lord, in your mercy.......hear our prayer.

We thank God for our health and strength and our ability to enjoy God’s gifts to us every day. We pray for all who work to bring healing and relief to those who are suffering, for doctors, nurses and all who work in clinics and residential homes for the elderly. We remember all who care for the disabled and others who cannot look after themselves in their own homes, and today we pray (for....................) and those known to us whom we name aloud or in the silence of our hearts.

Lord, in your mercy.......hear our prayer.

We pray for our local community, all who provide us with our daily needs, the emergency services, those who work in shops, offices, schools and those in national and local governments.

Lord, in your mercy.......hear our prayer.

We remember all those whom we have known and are no longer with us, particularly those whose years mind occurs at this time.

Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers, Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.
