Almighty God,
whose Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ,
is the light of the world:
may your people,
illumined by your word and sacraments,

A note from Helen
When you talk about significant events in your life, for how many of them do you include time of day, night or day, weather, date. Because for some events, being able to ‘situate’ them in the specifics of ‘when’ they occurred gives depth to their story. Do you remember the time you gave birth to your child/ren. Do you remember the specifics of your graduation, either from school or higher education or maybe even both. Do you remember the specifics of when you were given some truly bad news, or maybe some amazingly good news. In our gospel, John finds it important to specify that ‘it was about four o’clock in the afternoon’. Why was the time so important that he needed record. Time matters in this story, not just to mark time, but to remind us of God’s time. That God entered into time, when God did not have to. That God elected to be limited by time when God did not have to. That God decided time matters when omnipresence could have allowed for an easy way out. For the disciples, four in the afternoon was their first invitation to ‘be’ with Jesus, to ‘abide’ with him. Not just to come and see, but to ‘be’, and ‘abide’. Because ‘abiding’ is important for the author of this gospel. To abide is to belong; to be saved; to be assured of a future with God. Presence in time is the promise of Epiphany. And Epiphanic moments need to be declared in time. The incarnation anticipates and even demands that time matters. Because time matters to God and our times matter deeply to God.

Aboriginal Sunday - 22 January 2023
This year we shall be observing Aboriginal Sunday. There are special resources, from Common Grace, which we will be using for the day.
What is Aboriginal Sunday?
On January 26 1938, Aboriginal leaders including William Cooper, met for a Day of Mourning, seeking equality and full citizenship (though it would take another 30 years). The Australian Churches were then asked to set aside the Sunday before January 26 as Aboriginal Sunday (previously called Aborigines’ Day), a day for Christians to act in solidarity with Aboriginal peoples and the injustices being expected.
Clergy Summer School
Rev’d Helen will be attending Clergy Summer School on 16, 17, 18 January.

This week’s intercessions: Prepared by John N.
This is the day that the Lord has made....Let us rejoice and be glad in it.
Let us first thank God for the wonders of this world in which we live, for the heavens above and the earth beneath, and for all the living creatures with which we share this world. Let us always remember that we are but guardians of God’s creation for all those who will come after us and its beauties and resources must be treated wisely and preserved as far as possible.
Lord, in your mercy ...Hear our prayer.
Let us thank God for the peace and prosperity in which we live here in Australia and we pray for all those who live in areas where there is conflict and civil strife. Particularly we pray for all those people in Ukraine who have lost their homes, their possessions and their loved ones in this senseless war. We pray for all those who bring relief, shelter, food and medical help to those most in need in Ukraine and other areas of the world where there is civil strife and persecution.
Lord, in your mercy ...Hear our prayer.
We pray for the world-wide Anglican Communion of which we are members, everyone worshipping God today in their own languages and according to their own customs. We pray for church leaders as they seek God’s guidance for presenting the Gospel in increasingly secular environments. We pray for those involved in the selection of our new Archbishop, our regional bishop John, our priest Helen, and all parishioners who do God’s work in the parish.
Lord, in your mercy ...Hear our prayer.
We pray for our local community and for all those who provide us with the day-to-day services we need, emergency workers, those who serve us in shops and offices, for all school teachers and children. We remember all those who have been affected by floods in different parts of Australia, all who have lost their houses, and possessions, and are unable to live the lives to which they have long been accustomed.
Lord, in your mercy ...Hear our prayer.
We thank God for our health and strength, and pray for all who are suffering long or short term illness or incapacity. We pray for all medical staff in hospitals and clinics and for all who care for those in need in residential facilities or their own homes. We pray for those whose lives are burdened by looking after handicapped or other long-term afflictions, and for those who offer help to such people. Today we pray for..... and for any others who need our prayers at this time.
Lord, in your mercy ...Hear our prayer.
We remember all those who have been influential in or lives but are no longer with us, particularly ..... and we thank God for the life of Cardinal George Pell.
Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers.
Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
