Collect
Eternal God,
at the baptism of Jesus in the river Jordan
you proclaimed him your beloved Son,
and anointed him with the Holy Spirit:
grant that all who are baptised into his name
may keep the covenant they have made,
and boldly confess him as Lord and Saviour;
who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns,
one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.
Liturgy: via PowerPoint + APBA Colour – White
Readings: Isaiah 42.1-9; Psalm 29; Acts 10.34-43; Matthew 3.13-17
We acknowledge and pay our respects to the Wanggeriburra people of the Yugambeh Nation, the traditional owners and ongoing custodians of the land on which we gather, and to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people worshipping with us today.
A note from Helen
This week, we are in a bit of a ‘thin space’. We have gone from the birth of Jesus to his baptism, but we seem to have missed ‘Epiphany’, which was on Friday. Yet in the baptism, we can see the Epiphany tied into it. Jesus’ baptism, our baptism, stand as both promise and reminder. We are reminded of the promise that Baptism brings – that even in the wilderness, and maybe even in spite of the wilderness, or even because of the wilderness, our call to bring about the Kingdom of Heaven is meant to be manifest to everyone. For Matthew, the nature of epiphanies is communal. Everyone heard the declaration ‘this is my beloved son’, not just Jesus. So when he is led into the wilderness, he knows this is not a personal test, or private affair. The wilderness is its own epiphany. Baptism is about who God needs you, us all, to be. To be present in the wilderness. To proclaim that baptism cannot be just about ‘me’. It is about living life as being the light of the world for the sake of the Kingdom of Heaven here and now. You, we, are all God’s beloved children.

ABORIGINAL SUNDAY - 22 January 2023
This year we shall be observing Aboriginal Sunday. There are special resources, from Common Grace, which we will be using for the day.
What is Aboriginal Sunday?
On January 26 1938, Aboriginal leaders including William Cooper, met for a Day of Mourning, seeking equality and full citizenship (though it would take another 30 years). The Australian Churches were then asked to set aside the Sunday before January 26 as Aboriginal Sunday (previously called Aborigines’ Day), a day for Christians to act in solidarity with Aboriginal peoples and the injustices being expected.
CLERGY SUMMER SCHOOL
Rev’d Helen will be attending Clergy Summer School on 16, 17, 18 January.
This week’s intercessions: Prepared by Anne
Heavenly Father, we give thanks for this new day and new year, and as we gather here this morning to focus on the Baptism of our Lord, let us remember our own Baptisms and our calling to be Christians. May we be filled with such joy as we believe in you that our hearts overflow with love for you and for all who we meet along our journey.
Lord God and Father, help us to understand the mystery of the baptism of your Son. May we walk in your way, live our life for you and be mindful of your presence day by day.
Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.
Loving Lord, we remember all countries where there is war or conflict, especially Ukraine, and pray that you will look mercifully upon the sufferings of the people involved and all those seeking refuge and those offering it. Lord God we pray today for our friends, our families and our Christian community, that united by our common baptism we may always welcome the newcomer, the stranger and all who are vulnerable.
Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.
May our parish and community have a fruitful year in which prayer, friendship, and the works of charity, and outreach flourish.
Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.
Father God we pray for those who face difficulties in their personal lives. We raise before you all who are sick, the bereaved, those with problems in their families, in their relationships, in their neighbourhoods or in their workplace. Give them a patient faith in their troubles and the knowledge that you share their sufferings with them. We especially pray for any one we know who need our prayers, and we name allowed or in the silence of our hearts…………. Bless them all.
Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.
We give thanks for lives well lived and for happy memories. May they find rest in the eternal joy of heaven and may all who mourn their passing find comfort and peace.
Lord; in your mercy hear our prayer.
Father, we thank you for making us your children, for feeding us with the spiritual food which satisfies our longings and for the promise that you listen to our supplications and answer our requests.
Merciful father: accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen
Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers.
Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

January Retiring Collection: School Chaplaincy
School Chaplaincy is a wonderful ministry to children and staff, there are times as well when Chappys need to support families through a crisis. In our modern OZ society, the school is very much the first port of call when families are in trouble. The Trivia night that the chaplaincy committee held last year raised over $500 for chaplaincy support as well as about $500 for the Dorothy Fund, set up to help with family needs. All of the Dorothy money has already been spent. There are two chaplains in our local area, Nadine at Tamborine Mountain primary and Jodie at St Bernard's primary. We badly need a chaplain at Canungra primary.
