Collect

Loving God,

the light of the minds that know you,

the life of the souls that love you,

and the strength of the hearts that serve you:

help us so to know you that we may truly love you,

and so to love you that we may faithfully serve you,

whose service is perfect freedom;

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Deuteronomy 32.7; Ps 27.1-10; 1 Corinthians 1.10-18; Matthew 4.12-25

We acknowledge and pay our respects to the Wanggeriburra people of the Yugambeh Nation, the traditional owners and ongoing custodians of the land on which we gather, and to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people worshipping with us today.

A note from Helen

William Cooper. 1860-1941 Yorta Yorta Man. Pastor. Advocate. Campaigner and Hero.

In a letter to the Churches in 1938, 150 years after the arrival of the First Fleet- Yorta Yorta man and Pastor, William Cooper, called upon all Christian denominations to set aside the Sunday before January 26 th as Aborigines Day, what we now refer to as Aboriginal Sunday. It was a day set aside for prayer and reflection for Aboriginal people, and as an acknowledgment and protest of what was lost by the arrival of the Europeans

This week’s intercessions: Prepared by Keith S.

Creator God, we come before You with thanks and praise knowing that You are Love. We bow in reverence before You as we hold our Aboriginal sisters and brothers in our prayer.

Creator God, in your mercy: hear our prayer.

Lord Jesus, You are our focus and the centre of all that we do. You call us to be a reconciling presence - drawing all peoples together.

Reconciling God, in your mercy: hear our prayer.

Gracious God, by nature You are a God of justice. We put our trust in You afresh. We pray for reconciliation in those matters of injustice and hurt from the past and the present.

God of justice, in your mercy: hear our prayer.

Holy Spirit, we pray for the Aboriginal Christian Leaders as they pursue the conversations on matters of justice and reconciliation. Give all who are involved a willingness to listen to each other.

Empowering Spirit, in your mercy: hear our prayer.

Holy God, we pray for those who are suffering injustice and isolation - for all who are sick or in need. We pray particularly at this time for …………..

Healing God, in your mercy: hear our prayer.

We give thanks for those who have been beacons of light and love in our lives - for all who have taught, and are teaching, us to be people of justice and reconciliation.

Embracing God, in your mercy: hear our prayer.

“Continue to guide us as the Good Shepherd, as we continue to seek Your face and not just Your hand.

When the things of Earth are unjust, we exalt You Lord and ask for Heaven and Earth to collide. May Justice roll down and the High King of Heaven have His way among us.” Amen.

(* Inspired by a prayer written by Tahlia Smith, Gureng Gureng and South Sea Islander Woman.)

Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers.

Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

January Retiring Collection: School Chaplaincy

School chaplains support young people in one of today’s most high pressure environments – the schoolyard. SU QLD chaplains provide a safe, positive influence for our children as well as caring for staff and families. For many families the school is the community they turn to when in trouble and it is the chaplain who usually gives the pastoral support needed.

Emergency Relief @ St George’s
