INTERPRETING THINGS

This week was the vernal equinox in the southern hemisphere - The start of spring and warmer weather. I’ve stuck a photo I took of St Luke’s on the cover because it looked glorious under blue skies, bathed in morning sunshine.

Earlier this week the temperature hit 28 degrees, yet a man in the Aldi queue delighted in telling me that “this is cold weather.” I hear that sort of thing a lot. People love to tell me that soon it will be over 40, similarly they love to tell me about the killer snakes, vindictive spiders and even the swooping magpies that will have your eye out. I do listen and I’m sure there’s a lot of truth there, but it’s important to do more than just listen. For instance, Aldi man was telling me how cold it was, but he was wearing a t-shirt, shorts and sandals! I interpreted what he was saying to be: ‘yes it’s warm, but it will get even warmer.’

To understand the Bible, we need to do more than just listen. We need to interpret what we hear. Last Sunday we looked at the parable of the shrewd manager, the story isn’t an easy one, you have to use your brain to see the over-arching principle. That sort of complexity has not always been embraced. Many believe the Bible is inerrant and they believe that it clearly teaches that the universe is about 6000 years old. To believe that means only listening to a literal reading of the Bible and not looking at the overwhelming weight of scientific evidence. To take every word of the Bible literally is to ignore that much of the Bible is written in a poetic or allegorical style.

God gave us a book, but he also gave us a brain. Use both.

Pet Blessing Service Next Sunday

Next Sunday at 8am we shall be holding a pet blessing service in St Luke’s. Then at 4pm we shall be holding a special outdoor pet-blessing service at St George’s. Bring your cat, bring your dog, and even better bring your neighbour who loves her pet but doesn’t (yet) love church!

This week’s intercessions: Prepared by Jan

Heavenly Father, who created the stormy seas and the calm waters, fill us with

love for your creation. Help us to be sensitive to the Earth’s needs, to care for the preservation of the whole of the natural world. As stewards entrusted with

responsibility for such a finite resource may we encourage others with the example of practical living where all creation is valued and sustained.

Our Father in heaven, help us to keep our faith strong.

Heavenly Father, as we look to follow your teachings of love and tolerance, focus our hearts and minds not on material possessions but on the riches of life eternal in your presence. We pray for the Worldwide Anglican Communion and our guides, Archbishop Phillip, Regional Bishop John, Reverend Tom, John and Allan. Bless our congregation as we daily seek to live our lives to your glory.

Our Father in heaven, help us to keep our faith strong.

Heavenly Father, who looks not on our outward appearance but sees the motive of our hearts make us generous with our time and talents that we may indeed be rich in good deeds to all and always willing to share your love with others.

Help us to forgive others as you have forgiven us.

Our Father in heaven, help us to keep our faith strong.

Heavenly Father, thank you that you love all of your creation. We know that you love each person and weep with those who suffer. Comfort all who are suffering through sickness, conflict of war and strife or as the result of natural disasters.

Help us to comfort and share your love and sacrifice with all.

Our Father in heaven, help us to keep our faith strong.

Heavenly Father, we thank you for your servants who have gone before us to dwell in your house forever. We especially remember those whose years mind occurs at this time. We bring before you those close to us who we name aloud or in the silence of our hearts.

Our Father in heaven, help us to keep our faith strong.

Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers.

Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
