Sentence for the Day
Suddenly a bright cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud a voice said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him!” Matthew 17:5
Collect
O God,
in the transfiguration of your Son
you confirmed the mysteries of the faith
by the witness of Moses and Elijah,
and in the voice from the cloud
you foreshadowed our adoption as your children:
make us, with Christ, heirs of your glory,
and bring us to enjoy its fullness:
through the same Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen

A note from Helen
Have you ever had a ‘moment with God’. One of those moments when you ‘feel’ like you are walking hand in hand with God or where you feel an unmistakable ‘hand of God’ on you or in your life. Some people report these moments as if they are a ‘common occurrence’, but for most of us they are a not common, but they will occur in varying ways and under differing circumstances.
In the letter from Peter, he is still talking about witnessing the transfiguration as if it only happened yesterday, and he assures us his witness is true. But he also did not live a constant ‘mountain-top’ life. His life was very mundane, ordinary, and fully devoted to living the life God called him to. We have all had experiences which, when we share them, others may feel ‘that sort of thing never happens to me’, but when others share their stories with us, we may well have that same ‘why not me’ feeling.
Our own ‘mountain-top’ experiences are often over almost before we realise what has happened. But we are forever changed by them, just as Peter, and James and John were changed. But then life goes on, just as it did for Jesus, when he came down the mountain, people were brought to him to be healed – back to work. We too, go back to work, changed yes, but life does not give us ‘time off for divine moments.’ Jesus assures us, ‘fear not, I will be with you’, and that promise is not about more mountain top experiences, it is for the rest of our time, our time ‘down the mountain’ when life goes on and it may not be easy. As we leave the intimacy of communion with our risen Lord, we are reminded ‘do not be afraid, I will be with, so let’s go’.

This week’s intercessions: Prepared by Anne
Holy God your Son Jesus was wonderfully transfigured in front of his disciples high upon the holy mountain, and at that time he asked them to keep it a secret. Help us, not to keep the secret, but to proclaim it to all that Jesus Christ is Lord. Give us strength to live the Gospel and to carry our cross in order that the world will come to know him in the same, personal way as we do.
Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.
Gracious God, we pray for all the members of the Church in their vocation and ministry, that they may serve you in truth and love. We especially pray for our locum priest Helen, and her calling to serve the Church and to work together with parishioners of Tamborine Mountain Parish. We also pray for our AGM and Parish Council meeting today. We ask for guidance, wisdom and support.
Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.
Creator God, you gave us a beautiful world to live in and to care for. We know that in many areas our Stewardship has not met your expectations yet, through the victory of Jesus Christ, we know also that you can transfigure and restore all things in creation. We pray, earnestly, for a change of heart and attitude, an awakening to a better way of living, and the courage to reject wrong principles and decisions throughout the world.
Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.
God of time and space, we cry to you for your children and families in southern Turkey and northern Syria, following the earthquake that has devastated thousands of lives. Only they and you know what it is like to experience such trauma in the middle of the night.
Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.
Loving God, we pray for all who lie stricken with illness, grief or despair. Bring healing to every broken life, relief to all who are in pain, hope to the dying and strength to all who care for them. We especially pray for …………….
Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.
Merciful God, we raise before you those whom we love who are already transformed in likeness to your glorious body. Comfort us and all who mourn; give them a patient faith in this time of darkness and strengthen them with the knowledge of your love.
Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.
Everlasting God in the week that lies before us may we reflect your love in our families, our church and our community; so that the world can see that we are transformed by Christ and thereby draw others into Jesus’ loving care.
Merciful father: accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen
