Seventh Sunday

after Epiphany

 Sentence

Love your enemies, do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return.

You will be children of the Most High;

for he is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked.

Luke 6.35

Collect Epiphany 7

God of compassion,

keep before us the love you have revealed in your Son,

who prayed even for his enemies.

In our words and deeds help us to be like him,

through whom we pray,

Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour. Amen.

Prayer of the Week

 Almighty God,

you have taught us through your Son

that love is the fulfilling of the law:

grant that we may love you with our whole heart,

and our neighbours as ourselves;

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Fr Peter writes:

If we needed a reminder that the ways of God are distinct from what we normally experience, there is nothing clearer than the accounts given in today’s readings to help us.

Joseph reveals his identity to his brothers. They had sold him into slavery and deceived their father with evidence indicating that he had been killed by wild animals. Joseph sees this as God at work, protecting Egypt from a famine by revealing there would be 7 years of plenty to store food for 7 years of drought. This saved the Egyptians from starvation and could also save his people if the brothers brought them to Egypt.

Paul writing to the church in Corinth continues his teaching of the transition from the ways of the flesh to the ways of God. We are born in the ways of Adam and as Christians we are being transformed in Christ.

Jesus continues his teaching on the plain as we continue the reading from last week, love your enemies, do good, and lend expecting nothing in return.

How do you respond? Are we seeing God at work challenging us to rely on Christ to guide our decisions and choices in life? I pray we can be guided and empowered to rely on Christ-in-us to overcome the temptation to follow the mob, peer pressure and the ways of the world. Encourage others and support them as we journey together. Together, with Christ, we can do this.

Yours in the household of God, Peter+

Fr Peter will be in the parish Monday, Thursday and Sunday this week

Labyrinth Message

This week's labyrinth message for you to "walk with" is : Have you ever found your self totally demotivated and deflated in your endeavours or calling by another's criticism ? [ whether intended by them or not ] .. or, worse, caught yourself doing this also to another ?

In this week's Gospel, Jesus encourages us to eschew this … and to also take careful notice of the "measure" we use towards others. I wonder if you will be able to reach out to someone this week who may need a "heaped measure" of your support and encouragement in their becoming what God is calling them "to be and to do"?

Meditation - a weekly thought

Devotion We cannot satisfy the needs of the heart with outward things. It is the heart devoted to God that produces the fruit of holy action.

Singing group for integrated services.

All who would like to again be part of the singing group please join Sue Duncan in the Georgian room at about 9 am this Sunday and subsequently.

Prayers of the people   Prepared by Anne

Lord, we know that we are called to love our enemies.  We know that we are called to love all those who have mistreated us.  Help us to surrender to You any feelings of anger or hate and replace those feelings with true charity.

Lord God we pray for our world-wide Anglican Communion, and especially our Diocese of Brisbane. We pray for Philip our Archbishop and John our regional bishop, that they may lead us faithfully. We pray for our Locum Priest, Fr Peter, and congregations of St. Luke’s and St. George’s, that you may bind us in love and form us in the likeness of Jesus our Lord.

For your love and goodness, we give you thanks, O God.

We give thanks for the fellowship of the communities in which we live and work.  We commend to your keeping ourselves and each other, our families, those with whom we work and learn, our neighbours and our friends.  Enable us by your Spirit to live in love for you and for one another.

For your love and goodness, we give you thanks, O God.

We pray for all in need or distress, for comfort for the grieving and for hope for the despairing, for the companionship for the lonely and relief for those in pain.
Hear our prayers for those who are shut away from society, especially our elderly in nursing homes, the disabled and frail; for those who long for a comforting touch or a kindly word; and
for your little ones who are starved of love and affection.

For your love and goodness, we give you thanks, O God.

We give you thanks for all who have died in the faith, for all good and holy people who have recognised you in their midst. Show us your face and let us hear your voice, that we also may welcome you into our lives, and, with all your saints, receive from you the gift of everlasting life.

For your love and goodness, we give you thanks, O God.

Almighty God, you have taught us through your Son that love is the fulfilling of the law: grant that we may love you with our whole heart, and our neighbours as ourselves; you have promised to hear our prayers.

Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

Prayer points from Tom: We uphold Tom and his family -  wife, Amy, and four children: Matthew (13), Sophie and Adam (9 - twins) and Bee (8months). We give thanks that the three eldest children will be able to enrol at the local schools when they arrive, which is a big weight lifted off their shoulders!

We pray for a good ending to his job and their life in the UK and that the visas come through soon!

February Retiring Collection: Bush Ministry Fund

The Bush Ministry Fund (BMF) was established in 1998 to provide support for struggling parishes and clergy in the Western Region of the Anglican Church Southern Queensland. The aim of BMF is to maintain a caring ministry to families who live in towns and on properties in rural and remote area. Through these grants clergy can visit any property and are available to offer care and spiritual support, not only to Anglicans, but to anybody who seeks assistance in the community.

The BMF raises funds for ministry in the Western Region and encourages prayer. The money raised is primarily used to help parishes pay for the provision of ordained ministers, mostly in the form of stipends.

Chaplaincy

A big thank you for the generous donation to local school chaplaincy during January. We are still trying to find chaplains for the three primary schools in our area. If you know of anyone who may like to become a school chaplain please let me know.
