Sentence for the Day

‘Go and make disciples of all nations,’

Jesus commands; ‘I am with you always, to the close of the age.’

Matthew 28.19–20

Collect of the Day

O God,

whose Son, Jesus, prayed for his disciples,

and sent them into the world to proclaim the coming of your kingdom:

by your Holy Spirit,

hold the Church in unity,

and keep it faithful to your word,

so that, breaking bread together,

we may be one with Christ in faith and love and service,

now and for ever. Amen.
Collect of Commitment

O Lord, you have taught us that you will require much from those to whom much is given:

Grant that we whom you have called to so goodly a heritage

may share more abundantly with others what we so richly enjoy,

and in serving them may know the glory of serving you.

Amen.

Liturgy:  via PowerPoint + APBA   Colour – White

Readings: Acts 1.6-14; Psalm 68.1-10, 23-35; 1 Peter 5; John 17.1-11

We acknowledge and pay our respects to the Wanggeriburra people of the Yugambeh Nation, the traditional owners and ongoing custodians of the land on which we gather, and to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people worshipping with us today.

A note from Helen

It is now some 40 days since we celebrated Easter.  Last Thursday we celebrated the Ascension and next Sunday is Pentecost.  So how do we understand Jesus ‘descending’ and ‘ascending’ and the Spirit of God ‘coming down’ on the disciples and other believers at Pentecost.  Is this reflecting ‘literal’ language or is Luke using ‘metaphorical’ language.  Can we just accept that Jesus may have looked like he was ‘ascending’ and that this ascension was primarily a ‘change of state’ not a change of location and he changed from being present in the realm of space and time to being present in the realm of eternity, in the transcendent heavenly realm.  Our finite language about the ascension, limited as it is, is necessarily symbolic and metaphorical, and points to literal realities that are infinite and therefore indescribable.

Intercessions – prepared by Barbara

Holy and glorious God, You sent your son Jesus to teach those who believe and keep their faith that they will become one with you Father as Jesus is one with you. Jesus taught them as he teaches us today through all who teach and guide and we give thanks and praise for them and their faithfulness and service. We pray for those seeking ordination, baptism and confirmation and for the Holy Spirit to renew, refresh, restore and inspire them and us as we work on our mission action for the coming years.

Spirit of God, in your fullness, strengthen and restore us.

Holy and Glorious God, we pray for the leaders of the world and their peoples, those suffering war, violence and abuse, for all who have lost loved ones through accidents or any kind of trauma. We pray for the mentally ill and people in care and all who look after them. When they are fatigued give them courage and strength.

Spirit of God, in your fullness, strengthen and restore us.

Holy and glorious God, we bring to you those who are ill and in need of healing and a caring touch especially we pray for ............. who have asked for our prayers.

Strengthen and bless medical staff, paramedics, Firefighters, Police and SES.

We pray for peace in our streets and guidance in our outreach as Christians, to people we meet in our daily lives.

Spirit of God, in your fullness, strengthen and restore us.

Holy and glorious God, if we need to change to help people of all ages from babies to older age, to know you and Jesus and the Holy Spirit , give us strength to listen to you and your guidance, often through unusual ways, to speak out when opportunity arises  in sensitive and loving ways. For we can do all things through Jesus Christ your son.

Spirit of God, in your fullness, strengthen and restore us.

Holy and loving God, your glory and your fullness can be with us forever if we trust in you.  We thank you that though we cannot see you we can know and feel all that emanates from you, your loving kindness. We pray for those who have gone before us in the faith. May we know that when we die life changes but goes on in a different way to eternity and your love and peace.

(Prayer for a new Archbishop – Helen)

Spirit of God, in your fullness, hear us and grant that what we have asked in faith, we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
