ACCEPTABLE OR EXCEPTIONAL?
Last Sunday we were visited by Bishop John Roundhill.
He was there for all three of our services, meaning he was in the parish from about 7.30am until 5.30pm. A long day for him but a perfect way to truly see our parish.
Bishop John led the 8am and 10am services and I wonder if your ears pricked up at the same point that mine did? When leading the Collect he emphasised words which said we should “offer [God] acceptable worship.”
I found myself thinking “Hmmm, what’s that then?” From the style of music, to the liturgy, to the content (and length) of the sermon we all have very different ideas about what worship should look like.
What is deemed acceptable worship in one service simply won’t fly in another service.
I also found myself criticising the word ‘acceptable’ - It sounds like we’ll be happy with a C-grade for the worship this Sunday! Surely we need to be striving for an A-grade because the whole point of worship services is to glorify God in the best way we possibly can.
Thankfully that was what was on the metaphorical report-card when I met with our Bishop afterwards. He really enjoyed the two services he led and preached at in the morning, and loved the one he observed at 4pm. In fact, the word “exceptional” was used to describe the fact that we are providing more-than-acceptable worship to different generations.
I believe it is the job of the priest to make sure that people can experience more-than-acceptable worship on a Sunday but the job of each person is to recognise that worship does not stop on Sunday! Worship involves glorifying God through everything you say or do in the week.
Maybe last week your ‘worship’ was just about acceptable, try and make this week exceptional.

CLERGY CONFERENCE THIS WEEK
I will be away this week at a diocesan conference in Noosa Heads and will not be contactable over email or phone. I will be back in time for next Sunday’s services but in the meantime please contact the parish office if needed. Tom.
EMAIL SCAM
Unfortunately, a scammer has been emailing parishioners this week pretending to be me. They were emailing from an email account that was not tom.hunton@anglicanchurchsq.org.au I will only ever email you from that email account. If you say an email purporting to be from me which comes from any other account please block the email, report it as a ‘phishing scam’ and do not reply to the email. Tom.
This week’s intercessions: Prepared by Keith
“For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” Hebrews 14:11.
Gracious God who hears us and embraces us with your love, we offer our prayers to you today.
We pray for your church throughout the world, particularly in those places where it is difficult to live and be faithful as Christians. We pray for our sisters and brothers in countries where they are persecuted.
Gracious God: surround them with your love.
We pray for the world, particularly where there is conflict, war and political turmoil. We pray for the people of the Ukraine. We pray for the care of this planet, for the care of plants and animals and for recognition of how we are together part of a living, loving entity.
Gracious God: give us wisdom, grace and care.
We pray for this local community, for the various bodies to which we belong. We pray for guidance as we seek to be bearers of compassion and love to others. We pray for this Parish community for a deepening bond of fellowship with you and one another. We pray for Tom, our Parish Priest as he guides us on our spiritual journey together.
Gracious God: fill us with compassion and love.
We pray for those who ask for our prayers at this time, aloud, or in the silence of our hearts ………….
Gracious God: pour your healing grace upon them.
We give thanks for those who have gone before, and who have been shining examples of your love. We remember ……. whose years’ mind occurs at this time.
Gracious God: thank you for your presence in others.
Accept our prayers through Jesus Christ our Lord who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
