MARY MAGDALENE
The photo on today’s notice sheet is from the fundraising luncheon at St Luke’s two weeks ago.
Breaking bread and celebrating together has always been a big part of the Christian faith. This Friday was the feast day of Mary Magdalene and if you were in mainland Europe right now you would probably know that – banners fly from balconies, a special mass is celebrated, followed by meals, music and entertainment.
When I first saw this in Spain I wondered why Mary Magdalene was given such celebrated status. I remember thinking she doesn’t seem that remarkable. I probably thought that because, let’s face it, she’s a woman in a Bible written by men, preached about in pulpits occupied almost entirely by men throughout history.
Whilst only ever giving brief remarks about her, the Bible does tell us she supported Jesus’ ministry out of her own resources (Luke 8:2-3.) That passage also tells us that seven evil spirits had come out of her. Presumably Jesus had done this work and whilst I don’t know what that exorcism might have involved (or what it may represent to us in the 21st Century) I do know that we are supposed to see that Jesus totally changed her life and that she followed him closely thereafter. So closely in fact that she is mentioned twelve times throughout the gospel stories (more than most disciples) and was present right to the end: She was there at Jesus’ crucifixion and the first to witness his resurrection.
I think it’s the example of following Jesus’ so closely that makes her remarkable. She lived a life worthy of remark on twelve occasions in the Bible simply because her life was turned around by Jesus and she then followed him for every step of her life’s journey.

This week’s intercessions: Prepared by Barbara
God of creation and all nations, we give our praise and thanks for warmth in the cold and rain, and sunshine and shade on the earth when we need it. We thank you for the rainforest and those who look after it.
God of earth and sky, waters and dry land hear our prayers. Help us to love you with all our hearts
God of the nations, your church and its mission need us to point to Jesus and his teachings. We pray for the worldwide church, our Archbishops, Bishops and our Priests as they work, day by day, to encourage and inspire us and all congregations. When times are hard, give them, and us, strength and courage to carry on. We pray especially for Tom, our priest, getting over Covid and learning his way around here. Thank you that he answered your call to bring his family to this new life.
God of Love and Encouragement hear out prayers. Help us to love you with our all our soul.
God of the meek and lowly, stressed mothers and fathers need our prayers. We pray for them that they will get the help they need so all will be safe in their homes. Our parish needs young families for continuing in the future. We give thanks for those who teach RE in schools and John Corner in his ministry with children. May the numbers grow under their care and love. We pray for First Nations people and for understanding of their culture, that we may all be one. Thank you for trainers and others who reach out to work with young people.
God of all peoples hear our prayers. Help us to love you with all our strength
God of amazing love, we pray for the many sick people at home and in hospitals and for medical staff and nurses who need rest. Guide people in charge to make the right decisions so all will get what they need. In our parish and community on the mountain and in Canungra we pray for those who have asked for our prayers in the silence of our hearts or named aloud….. ………….heal them and bless them.
God of love and forbearance hear our prayers. Help us to love you with all our mind.
Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers.
Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
July Retiring Collection:
Religious Education Books for Canungra State School
Students of Canungra State School have the privilege of receiving Religious Instruction once a week. Each student receives two workbooks for the year which are used during lesson time. The teachers also receive a Teachers Manual. Thus, we have an outlay of around $1000 per year. Religious Instruction is an important ministry as this is the only time the kids get to hear he Word of God. Please help this worthy cause. (We are also still looking for an instructor as some classes are currently missing out)
St Luke’s Faith Journey Discussion
An informal opportunity for discussion about the mission of our faith group and review of our Mission Action Plan. Sunday 31st July after the service.
Stewardship
It’s not too late to return the yellow commitment cards if you haven’t yet been able to do so. They can be placed in with the offertory or posted to the parish.
They provide useful information for our good treasurer to create his next budget.
