THE LORD’S PRAYER

According to the Guinness book of World Records, the longest distance somebody has travelled while sleepwalking is 160km! The honour belongs to Michael Dixon who somehow, while sleepwalking, boarded a freight train in Illinois, USA, got off when it stopped and was then found walking barefoot in his pyjamas near the train track in the neighbouring state of Indiana!

Cool story. Why am I telling it?

Well, very few of us literally sleepwalk but all of us figuratively ‘sleep walk’ through so many activities in life.

One of those activities is prayer: The Lord’s prayer is something we pray in church every Sunday and many of us pray it at least daily, if not more frequently.

Sometimes, when used a lot, words or phrases lose their meaning and it’s possible that we sometimes ‘sleepwalk’ our way through the Lord’s Prayer without really being conscious of what we are saying.

So, as a church we are going to consciously take a slow walk through the Lord’s prayer together! Starting this Sunday we are embarking on a three-part sermon series based on the Lord’s prayer at our two morning services (at the 4pm service we are going to sprint through it in one week: The entire service (not just the sermon) will be based on the Lord’s Prayer this Sunday)

There will be two readings each Sunday that speak about the Lord’s prayer, I am going to preach about each line individually and we are going to pray over each line together.

Hopefully something of the Lord’s prayer will come alive over the next three Sundays for you, hopefully this will help you come closer to God in prayer. Hopefully we will all wake up to the beauty of the Lord’s Prayer.

Parish Keys

Over the years many keys to the church and buildings around St George’s have been given out to those with responsibilities that required them to have access, at the time. We no longer have any keys to give out to those who might now need access. The nature of our key system means that each key cost $25 to cut, so it is in our best interests to avoid such an expense. If you are in possession of akey that you no longer, or rarely need we would greatly appreciate it ‘s return to the parish office.

This week’s intercessions: Adapted from APBA

Our Father in heaven, your Son Jesus Christ has promised that you will hear us when we ask in faith: receive the prayers we offer.

We give thanks for the beauty and abundance of the earth. Give us and all peoples grace to live in harmony with your creation. Show us the paths we must take to preserve what you have gifted to us and ways forward that are fair for all your children.

Our Father in heaven, hear our prayer.

We give thanks for those who have put themselves forward to lead our nations. Guide them always to serve the common good. Show those who speak where many listen, those who write what many read and those who influence what many see, ways to do so with honesty and integrity. Give the people of this land a spirit of unselfishness, compassion, and fairness in public and private life.

Our Father in heaven, hear our prayer

We give thanks for the good news of salvation for all people. Send out the light and truth of your gospel and bring people everywhere to know and love you. Enable those who minister among us to commend your truth by their example and teaching. May we gladly receive and obey your word. We pray for the worldwide Anglican Communion and its leaders, our Archbishop Phillip, regional bishop John and Tom, John and Allan as they serve us in our parish, along with all those who offer so much of their time and talents to drive our churches forward.

Our Father in heaven, hear our prayer

We give thanks for all those in our communities who selflessly offer their support to those in need. We pray for comfort and healing for those who are suffering with sickness, sorrow, homelessness and the many other problems faced by so many every day. At this time, we especially pray for (……………….and) those known to us who we name aloud or in the silence of our hearts.

Our Father in heaven, hear our prayer

We give you thanks for your servants in every age and especially those whose years mind occurs at this time. We pray that those who have died in poverty, or from malnourishment or by homelessness will be gathered around the heavenly table. Grant that we, with all your saints, may be brought to a joyful resurrection and the fulfilment of your kingdom.

Our Father in heaven, hear our prayer

In preparation for our St Luke’s Faith Journey discussion let us all pray this prayer of mission for our churches: God of mission, who alone brings growth to your church, send your Holy Spirit to give vision to our planning, wisdom to our actions and power to our witness.

Help our church to grow in numbers, in spiritual commitment to you

and in service to our local community,

Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers.

Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Religious Education Books for Canungra State School

Students of Canungra State School have the privilege of receiving Religious Instruction once a week. Each student receives two workbooks for the year which are used during lesson time. The teachers also receive a Teachers Manual. Thus, we have an outlay of around $1000 per year. Religious Instruction is an important ministry as this is the only time the kids get to hear he Word of God. Please help this worthy cause. (We are also still looking for an instructor as some classes are currently missing out)

St Luke’s Faith Journey Discussion
