BLESSED ANIMALS
The other day I was at a meeting of priests. I don’t know the collective noun: ‘A Pack of Priests’? ‘A Flock of Priests’? ‘A Collect of Priests’?
Anyway, it started with: “Let’s go around the room, everyone say something about how your week’s going.” I was second up, following priest number one who grumbled about some issue with parish finances, I responded by saying I was having a challenging week with three funerals. Priest number three went a different direction and told us all that this week he had been prescribed medication which has had the unwanted side-effect of giving him a very itchy rash all over his body (he went into precise details, so I know it was all over his body!) Priest number four then said that this week he had to have his dog put to sleep, but as we consoled he laughed, saying “I don’t believe in getting overly emotional about animals and I don’t believe in doggy heaven!”
Maybe ‘A Peculiarity of Priests’ is the best term?
I disagree with priest four. I think we should get emotional about animals: They share our world with us, they share our lives with us and this Sunday they share our churches with us! We are inviting people to bring their dogs, cats, koalas etc to our 8am St Luke’s service and to a special outdoor 4pm St George’s service for an animal blessing this week. One of our two readings will come from Revelation - It speaks of an end-time where creation is restored. Not just humans but many different aspects of creation restored for eternity. So maybe priest four was wrong, maybe all dogs do go to heaven. But whether he is right or wrong about the afterlife, one thing is certain: animals are part of our earthly lives and this Sunday we will bless them and give thanks for them.

This week’s intercessions: Prepared by Anne
Heavenly Father, as we rejoice in the gift of this new day, so may the light of your presence, O God, set our hearts on fire with love for you; now and for ever. Amen.
Heavenly Father, may we realise that as our pets trust us to take care of them, so we should trust You to take care of us, and in taking care of them we share in Your love for all Your creatures. Enlighten our minds to preserve all endangered species so that we may continue to appreciate all of Your creations.
Blessed are you, Lord our God, in all your creatures.
You made us stewards of your creation.
Please let us say together the prayer of St. Francis
Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.
O, Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
it is in dying that we are born again to eternal life.
We pray for all the people who have died and those who mourn their loss. May they find comfort and peace in the perfection of God’s love. (Pause) Lord hear us O good Lord hear us.
Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers.
Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

October Retiring Collection: Turning Canungra Pink
Turning Canungra Pink in October is an annual event which is run by the Canungra Chamber of Commerce to raise awareness and funds for all types of cancer. This event was started in 2011 by a local business owner, herself a breast cancer survivor. In 2013 the Canungra Chamber of Commerce became involved, creating a fundraising event that lasted throughout October and involved most of the businesses and many residents in the town. In 2021 Turning Canungra Pink successfully raised over $79,000 - a great effort in a small town. Funds raised are donated 50% to Cancer Council Queensland and 50% to Pink Assist, a fund used to provide support to local people with cancer.
