Sentence for the Day
Jesus said to them, ‘Who do you say that I am?’ Simon Peter answered, ‘You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.’
Matthew 16.15–16
Collect of the Day
O God, fount of all wisdom,
in the humble witness of the apostle Peter
you have shown the foundation of our faith:
give us the light of your Spirit,
that, recognising in Jesus of Nazareth the Son of the living God,
we may be living stones for the building up of your holy Church;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Liturgy: via PowerPoint + APBA Colour – Green
Readings:
Exodus 1.8-2.10; Psalm 124; Romans 12.1-8; Matthew 16.13-20
We acknowledge and pay our respects to the Wanggeriburra people of the Yugambeh language region, the traditional owners and ongoing custodians of the land on which we gather, and to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people worshipping with us today.
A note from Helen
Our readings today invite us to reflect on our individual unique vocations as they reflect our relationship with God. Moses is saved from death by the intervention of the most unlikely candidate. The Egyptian leaders are hell-bent on destroying all male Hebrew born children, but the new-born Moses is rescued by none other than Pharoah’s daughter. But the story raises questions in us about ‘Why just him’ and ‘What about the thousands of other babies destined for untimely deaths.” We ponder whether divine providence plays favourites and is not interested in any but those destined for greatness. Yes, providence was at work here, but the agency of the midwives, Pharoah’s daughter and Moses’ mother had a large part to play.
In our modern world, there are many places where children are at risk of starvation, civil war, religious fundamentalism, sweat shops, and sex trafficking. And in the wake of the violence and hatred of many groups, parents are frightened. Some groups, ethnic groups, economic groups, religious groups, are at risk from those who are supposed to care for them. Are we able to help them survive in the way that Moses was delivered from death? Moses was saved by an individual case of kindness. Today, we need to go beyond individual kindness to create beloved communities and compassionate institutions. We need to create sanctuaries of love – hate-free zones – within us and within our communities.
