Sentence for the Day

‘All the trees of the forest sing for joy”.

Psalm 96:12

 Collect of the Day

God, our Creator, whose glory fills our planet, help us to

discern your vibrant presence among us, especially in the

mysteries of the forest. Help us empathise with your

forest creatures who are suffering. Lift our spirits to

rejoice with the forest and all the creatures of the forest.

In the name of Christ, who reconciles and renews all

things in creation. Amen.

Liturgy:  via PowerPoint + APBA   Colour – Green

 Readings:

Genesis 2.4b-22; Psalm 139:13-16; Acts 17:22-8; John 3:1-16

We acknowledge and pay our respects to the Wanggeriburra people of the Yugambeh language region, the traditional owners and ongoing custodians of the land on which we gather, and to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people worshipping with us today.

 A note from Helen

Today, we read the ‘second’ creation story, where God planted a garden in Eden, and there God put a man who was formed ‘out of the ground’.  This man is the first thing created, and all trees and animals were created after ‘man’ was created.  Trees produce 40% of the planet’s oxygen.  Trees have become the archetypal image of creation – the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.  And the image of the tree remains throughout our Scripture.  We, who know the role of forests and trees in the life of our planet, are called to deepen the image of the tree of life by recognising the profound link between the tree, the forest and the breath of life.  Every tree that breathes assists us to rehabilitate our messy carbon footprint.  Every tree is therefore a tree of life.

Intercessions prepared by Jan

Creator God, you formed a world of wonder and beauty for us to love and care for. Guide us to see and feel your presence with us anew whenever we consider your marvellous creation. We pray for soaking rains to refresh our thirsty land. Help us to be faithful stewards conserving the Earth’s natural resources. We thank you for all wildlife carers especially those caring for sick and injured wildlife in our area. As we live our lives, may we be respectful of our responsibilities to love and serve you, Father God and provide for generations to come.

For your love and goodness, we give you thanks, O God.

Caring God, you delight in a fruitful vineyard, bearing much fruit. May we in St George’s and St Luke’s be a loving, caring Christian community bringing delight to your heart as we show your love and understanding to one another and to the wider community around us. Guide and strengthen Reverend Helen as she leads us. We also pray for our administrator, Cameron, Bishop John, John Corner and Allan. Centre our hearts on your teachings to lead us forward in your will. May the Holy Spirit be alive in our hearts and minds each day.

For your love and goodness, we give you thanks, O God.

Living God, you know the heart and needs of each person in our wider community. Help us to be still and hear your voice guiding us to show your love to all. We thank you Father God that in caring for those in need we may be a witness for your love. We thank you for our school chaplains and all  those who work with children and their families each week in our parish activities.

For your love and goodness, we give you thanks, O God.

Listening God, as you weep with those who weep and are in need we pray especially for those in need known to us whom we name aloud or in the silence of our hearts……(a period of time for silent prayer)……. Use each of us, we pray, to ease the burdens of those around us.

For your love and goodness, we give you thanks, O God.

Loving God, you call to yourself those faithful servants whose earthly work is complete. We pray for your comfort to be with the families of those whose yearly remembrance occurs at this time. We thank you for the sure and certain knowledge that in your time we will join with those who have gone before us to praise and worship you for all eternity.

For your love and goodness, we give you thanks, O God.

(Prayer for a new Archbishop – Rev’d Helen)

You are our God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Grant that what we have asked for in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen

September Retiring Collection:  Little Lukies at St Luke’s, Canungra

Little Lukies is a church-based program run at St Luke’s for primary school aged children every Monday afternoon during the school term. It has been operating since 2019 (with only a few necessary breaks during covid). St Luke’s Guild and Jan Armstrong have resourced this important activity that introduces the children to God and the church. Numbers have risen to up to 20 children weekly. The children are given afternoon tea when they arrive from school. This is followed by a game, a ‘lesson’ in the church and an activity related to the story that is taught each week.
