Sentence for the Day

At the name of Jesus, every knee shall bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Philippians 2.10–11

Collect

Everlasting God,

in your tender love for the human race

you sent your Son to take our nature,

and to suffer death upon the cross:

in your mercy enable us to share in his obedience to your will

and in the glorious victory of his resurrection;

through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Liturgy:  via PowerPoint + APBA   Colour – Red

Readings:

Isaiah 50.4-9a; Psalm 31.9-18; Philippians 2.5-11; Matthew 26.14-27

We acknowledge and pay our respects to the Wanggeriburra people of the Yugambeh Nation, the traditional owners and ongoing custodians of the land on which we gather, and to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people worshipping with us today.

A note from Helen

Today started out so good for Jesus.  A triumphal procession.  Many people gladly welcoming a man riding into town as a hero, a welcome saviour who, they thought, would save them from painful Roman rule.  But then, 5 days later it all ended in death.  Children waving palm branches gave way to death threats being shouted by violent mobs.  And a question many ask – why did Jesus have to die.

Luke gives us three reasons – he was subverting the nation; he opposed the payment of taxes to Caesar; and he said He himself is Christ, a King.  John tells us an angry mob warned Pilate “If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar.”  There were so many who were agreeing with and shouting the script fed them by those who opposed Jesus, those who wanted to get rid of this ‘threat’ at any cost.  What about us.  How many times have we been ‘one of the crowd’ without even realising it.  How many times have we been the one ready to ‘sell them down the river’ because fighting against the tide is too hard.

This week’ Intercessions: Prepared by John N

This is the day that the Lord has made...Let us rejoice and be glad in it.

Let us first thank God for the wonderful world in which we live, for the natural beauty all around us and for all the living creatures with which we share God’s creation. May we always remember that we are but custodians of this world for those who will come after us, and that we must care and preserve all its resources.

Lord, in your mercy....Hear our prayer

Let us thank God for the peace and prosperity in which we live here in Australia, and pray for all those areas around the world where there is conflict and civil strife. In particular we pray for all those affected by the war in Ukraine, for all who have lost their homes, their loved ones, their possessions and all who have fled to other countries to seek refuge. We pray for all who are seeking ways to end the war and for all who are assisting and aiding the refugees.

Lord, in your mercy....Hear our prayer

We pray for the world wide Christian church of which we are members, and pray for all its leaders as they seek ways to spread the Gospel in areas where they may face persecution, discrimination or indifference. We pray for all who are involved in selecting a new Archbishop for us, for our regional bishop John, our priest Helen, our parish Council and for all who work day by day to keep our parish running.

Lord, in your mercy....Hear our prayer

Let us thank God for our health and strength and our ability to enjoy God’s gifts to us, and we pray for all who at this time are suffering from long or short-term illness and infirmity. We pray for all places of healing and treatment and all who work there. We pray for those who care for the elderly and others who cannot look after themselves, either in residential care or in their own homes, and for those who find it difficult to spare their time to do so.

Today we pray particularly for......

Lord, in your mercy....Hear our prayer

We pray for all those who provide the services on which we rely in our daily lives, emergency services, shops, offices and schools. We pray for all who have been elected to govern over us in national, state and local governments, that their decisions may reflect the views of those who have elected them and personal opinions and advantages take no part in their work.

Lord, in your mercy....Hear our prayer

We remember all those whom we have known but are no longer with us.....

Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers, Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
