Collect of the Day

O God,

your Son has taught us that those

who give a cup of water in his name

will not lose their reward:

open our hearts to the needs of your children,

and in all things make us obedient to your will,

so that in faith we may receive your gracious gift,

eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Liturgy:  via PowerPoint + APBA   Colour – Green

Readings:

Genesis 22.1-14; Psalm 13,16-19; Romans 6.12-23; Matthew 10.40-42

We acknowledge and pay our respects to the Wanggeriburra people of the Yugambeh Nation, the traditional owners and ongoing custodians of the land on which we gather, and to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people worshipping with us today.

A note from Helen

Jesus’ message to us this morning seems ‘straight forward’.  Yep, if you welcome a righteous person in the name of a righteous person you will receive reward, if you offer a cup of water in the name of a disciple, you will not lose your reward.  Simple.  Be welcoming, give out water bottles.  After all, we are good at hospitality, aren’t we?  But today’s gospel is not about us extending welcome, it is about us receiving welcome.  It is about the risks and rewards of extending hospitality to God’s provocative, discomforting, and truth-telling messengers.  The disciples were sent out into the world to share a message that was not what people wanted to hear, we too have a message that not everyone will want to hear.  The risk is, not everyone will open the door to receive Christ’s message, to offer us a glass of water.  But that should not dissuade us from continuing to be Christ’s feet, hands, and heart in our communities.  And I would like to thank everyone for their response to our Commitment Sunday.  It has been very encouraging that so many people have responded so generously to supporting the mission of the church here in Tamborine and Canungra.

Intercessions – prepared by Anne

Gracious and merciful God, you have promised rest to the weary and relief to the heavy laden: hear the prayers we bring for your people.

We pray for the world wide Christian church of which we are members, and pray for all its leaders as they seek ways to spread the Gospel in areas where they may face persecution, discrimination or indifference. We pray for all who are involved in selecting a new Archbishop for us, for our regional bishop John, our priest Helen, and for all who work day by day to keep our parish running.

Lord, hear your people and answer our prayers

We pray for teachers, parents and children on school holidays around the country, that this will be a time of rest, refreshment and reinvigoration for them all.

Lord, hear your people and answer our prayers

We pray for the First Nations peoples of Australia and the Torres Strait, that NAIDOC week will help everyone appreciate the role of elders in passing on their traditions and culture.

Lord, hear your people and answer our prayers

We pray for the recently departed, especially Brian Lyne, and for all those whose anniversary of death occurs around this time.  We pray for Brian’s family, Robyn, Daniel, Ellen Sammy.  Comfort and help them to know your love.

Lord, hear your people and answer our prayers

Gracious God, we pray for people we know who are ill, or anxious, and for those that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens. We pray that you will lead them, and us, in peace towards healing and wholeness of mind and spirit.  We pray for the continued recovery of all who are known to us especially John K. and……………

Lord, hear your people and answer our prayers

Loving God, we offer ourselves to you in faith and confidence. Show us as we go out into the world how we can best prepare ourselves to be part of your response to our prayers. Fill us with the Spirit of life which was in Christ Jesus, your Son and our Saviour.

Lord, hear your people and answer our prayers

(Prayer for a new Archbishop – Helen)

Merciful Father: Accept these prayers for the sake of your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen
