      PARISH BULLETIN

30th January 2022

 Fourth Sunday

after Epiphany

 Sentence

Now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face.

Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known.

1 Corinthians 13.14

Collect

Righteous God,

you confound the world’s wisdom

by giving your blessing to the lowly and pure in heart:

give us such a hunger and thirst for justice

and perseverance in striving for peace,

that in our words and deeds

the world may see the promise of your kingdom,

which has been revealed in Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Collect for the People of Tonga

 Loving God,

We pray for the people of Tonga,

for all affected by the volcano and tsunami,

for those who have died or lost loved ones,

for those who have been injured, for those who have lost homes and livelihoods.

We pray that their urgent needs may be met,

that nations will be generous in showing their support,

and that they will be resilient in the face of crisis.

We pray too that communications may soon be restored.

This we ask in the name of Jesus, your son, our Lord. Amen

Fr Peter writes:

God revealed to Jeremiah that God knew him in the womb before he was born and he was anointed for his life task (Jer 1:5ff). The psalmist knew God and put his trust in God from his birth to his youth (Ps 71:1-6). Paul reminded the Corinthians that whatever we do, no matter how good, unless we do it with love it is just noise ( Cor 13:1-3).

Our gospel reading (Lk 4:21-30) continues on directly from that for last Sunday and reminds us that people respond differently to a given message or situation. At first, the people responded to Jesus favourably but then they thought of his background. The knew him as an ordinary local person. They wanted Jesus to act differently and do what they wanted, how they wanted. Then they got angry and wanted to do away with him. Jesus, however, walked through the crowd and moved on.

God knew each of us in the womb too. Even as our body was being formed, God loved us and had a plan for us. If we put our trust on God as we face the challenges in our lives, if we open our lives to hear what Jesus is saying to us, our background and our circumstances do not matter. Jesus meets us where we are today and provides the guidance, the strength and the capacity to express love. Our religious practices, our best intentions are nothing without love. We cannot generate that love. True love comes from God alone so we can love the unlovable, those who disagree with us or reject us. God’s love is unconditional and when we know that love, we are empowered to love others unconditionally too.

May you know just how much God loves you today. ‘For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.’ (Jn 3:16-17)

Yours in the household of God,

Peter+

Prayers of the people   Prepared by Barbara

Father of all, we bring before you the people of the world and their needs.  We pray for indigenous people of this land and give thanks for their care of the land. We give thanks for a change in other people's feeling and attitude towards them. We know Lord how close we are in our spiritual beliefs and understanding of creation. We pray the love will continue to grow between everyone. Your caring love working between each other.

Father of all we give you thanks and praise.

Father of all, we thank you and pray for our clergy, in all our churches. We are all finding it hard to do the work of the mission you left for us. As we wait for Tom and his family, help us to change our age old attitudes to suit the younger generations, to welcome them into the church and love them as they are. We will need them to carry on your mission in the world, knowing they can call on you any time for help and guidance.

Father of all we give you thanks and praise.

Father of all, in our community we pray and give thanks for all working with children at this difficult time. For parents at home with children off school, for teachers and students at universities preparing to return. For church groups especially Little Lukies and Jan and her helpers. We pray for inspiration for other groups struggling to keep going during the pandemic.

Father of all we give you thanks and praise.

Merciful God there are many who are needing your love and support in hospitals and care homes and so many who have died. We pray for medical, paramedics and nursing staff, and for all who have lost loved ones recently. Bless them and give them peace and courage in their sorrow. We pray for those known to us and those who have asked for our prayers, naming them out loud or in the silence of our hearts....................................

Almighty God there is so much we could bring to you, but you know our needs and we thank you for always being present within us, if only we would seek you in the silence of our hearts.

Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord . Amen.

Labyrinth Message

This week's labyrinth message for you to "walk with" is : Often it is those who you live with [ particularly your kids ] that are the least impressed with all of your "success" … oh dear, how "pride puncturing" this can be :(

In this week's Gospel, Jesus is confronted by his hometown crowd that quickly becomes enraged …yet he did not even mention what he had done elsewhere. I wonder how we would have reacted in the face of such undeserved rage? Perhaps we could also reflect upon how Jesus and His call [ to now urgently and as a priority embrace the lost, the poor, prisoners, those with disability and the oppressed of our community] would be received today in our own homes and churches ?
