       PARISH BULLETIN

6th February 2022

Fifth Sunday

after Epiphany

  Sentence

Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, and was buried,

and was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,

and appeared to many.

 1 Corinthians 15.3–4

Collect

Most holy God,

in whose presence angels serve in awe,

and whose glory fills all heaven and earth:

cleanse our unclean lips

and transform us by your grace

so that your word spoken through us

may bring many to your salvation;

through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

God for ever and ever. Amen.

Collect for the People of Tonga

 Loving God,

We pray for the people of Tonga,

for all affected by the volcano and tsunami,

for those who have died or lost loved ones,

for those who have been injured, for those who have lost homes and livelihoods.

We pray that their urgent needs may be met,

that nations will be generous in showing their support,

and that they will be resilient in the face of crisis.

We pray too that communications may soon be restored.

This we ask in the name of Jesus, your son, our Lord. Amen

Fr Peter writes:

Have you ever been challenged and felt inadequate when asked to consider a position or role in the church, at work or in the community? In our readings this week we hear of people who did. Isaiah said: ‘Woe is me! I am lost, for I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips; yet my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!’ Paul recalls his life before his conversion, ‘For I am the least of the apostles, unfit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.’ In the gospel reading, Jesus needs a platform from which to teach and the disciples have had an unsuccessful night of fishing.

What a change God can make when we face challenges! An angel brings a live coal from the altar and says, ‘Now that this has touched your lips, your guilt has departed and your sin is blotted out.’ Then he heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?’ And Isaiah said, ‘Here am I; send me!’ (Is 6:5-8) What a transformation! Paul is transformed by his encounter with the risen Lord and accepts his ministry. ‘But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace towards me has not been in vain. (1 Cor 15:10) The disciples hear Jesus’ teachings but still doubt when invited to move into deeper water for a catch. Yet they trust enough to have a go and get a miraculous catch, but when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, ‘Go away from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man!’ For he and all who were with him were amazed at the catch of fish that they had taken; and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. Then Jesus said to Simon, ‘Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching people.’ When they had brought their boats to shore, they left everything and followed him. (Lk 5:8-11)

As we face the challenges in building up the people of God in this place, let us be open to God’s presence and the transforming power of God in our lives as we review the past year at our AGM and prepare to receive our new priest. God is calling us all to new things. May the Holy Spirit inspire and empower us for the year ahead.

Yours in the household of God, Peter+

Labyrinth Message

This week's labyrinth message for you to "walk with" is : Have you ever just " given up" on something really important that you feel called to do [or somebody to support ] as the results you were working towards just didn't materialise... and as a result you just stopped trying ?

In this week's Gospel, Jesus invites Peter who had finished work for the day to throw out his nets once more and promises that he will catch heaps of fish [ despite Peter trying all night and catching nothing]. How easy for Peter [a professional fisherman] to dismiss a carpenter's advice … what would he know anyways ? However, despite Peter's reluctance, an abundant miraculous catch ensues. I wonder what or who we may have currently "given up on"? Perhaps this week, if we are open to it, Jesus may invite you to also try again on your "hopeless cause" ? Peter "gave Jesus a try" when invited and was surprised ...and changed ...will we do likewise ?

Prayers of the people   Prepared by David

Lord God, we come before you today in reverence, filled with humility in the face of your greatness. We give you thanks for your mercy, and pray your Holy Spirit is with us and the world, so we may do your will in every thought and action this day.

Heavenly Father, let us live according to your will.

Lord God, we promise, with your help and grace, to be fearless in the world; for if you are with us, who can be against us? We do not hesitate to call upon you, for your power and love to see us through anything this world can bring against us. This is a great gift you have given us. We thank and praise you for this, almighty God.

Heavenly Father, let us live according to your will.

Lord God, we were born a weak, defenceless child.

From birth until now your love has illumined our path and has guided us towards

the light of eternity.

From birth until now your gifts have been showered upon us.

From birth until now you have been there every step of our life's journey.

From birth until now we have a reason to say thank you and we do, together with all who have and will, come to know you.

Heavenly Father, let us live according to your will.

Lord God, let us not forget you as we go forth into the world this day. Lord, may our every word be a prayer, and our every act be testimony to your love and truth.

Heavenly Father, let us live according to your will.

Lord God, you bestowed on us the grace of Baptism and the Seal of the Holy Spirit;
who instils in us the desire to seek and help those who have lost a family member or a close friend. Luke writes in part (c6.v38) “Give to others, and God will give to you, the measure you use for others is the one God will use for you.” With this as our guide, enable us always, to speak and act with a pure spirit, with humility, patience, love, gentleness, peace, courage, and wisdom:
Heavenly Father, let us live according to your will.

Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers.

Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord . Amen.

Meditation - a weekly thought

Mother Theresa was asked about her daily routine of silent prayer. She replied,

“Well, I listen, He listens. If I cannot pray, He prays.” One can almost sense the

stillness in her answer. ”Be still and know that I am God”

February Retiring Collection: Bush Ministry Fund

The Bush Ministry Fund (BMF) was established in 1998 to provide support for struggling parishes and clergy in the Western Region of the Anglican Church Southern Queensland. The aim of BMF is to maintain a caring ministry to families who live in towns and on properties in rural and remote area. Through these grants clergy can visit any property and are available to offer care and spiritual support, not only to Anglicans, but to anybody who seeks assistance in the community.

The BMF raises funds for ministry in the Western Region and encourages prayer. The money raised is primarily used to help parishes pay for the provision of ordained ministers, mostly in the form of stipends.
