God of mercy,

you are full of tenderness and compassion,

slow to anger, rich in mercy,

and always ready to forgive:

grant us grace to renounce all evil and to cling to Christ,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

A note from Helen

For the first few generations of Christians, when a person made the decision to commit their lives to Jesus and his followers, they were immediately taken to the nearest body of water and baptised.  There was no lengthy period of preparation or instruction.  It was figured that if you were willing to risk being fed to the lions for being a Christian, then it was reasonable to assume your decision was not an ‘idle thought’ or ‘whim’.  By the time of Emperor Constantine, Christianity was the official religion of the empire, and many people sought to ‘become Christian’ to guarantee political and social status and favour.   So a year long period of preparation was introduced, which finished with an intense final forty days of fasting, self-examination and prayer before the celebration of baptism in the Easter Vigil.  This forty day period is what we now know and observe as Lent, a time for us all to examine if we have what it takes to be the people of God, and followers of Jesus.

This week’s intercessions: Prepared by Peta

Jesus went up the mountain and called to him those whom he wanted, and they came to him. And he appointed twelve, whom he also named apostles, to be with him, and to be sent out to proclaim the gospel.

Lord God, today we farewell one of our own, John, as he takes up your call to spread your message in his return to work with the children of Africa. We pray your blessings on his mission, and on all the lives he touches.

We pray for all who proclaim your gospel. In our Diocese, we pray for the work of Phillip and John; in our parish we pray for Helen, John and Allan, as well as Keith, Jan, Gisela and Barbara, who share your gospel in small groups. Uphold us, when we want to follow you but we hesitate or falter.

And he appointed twelve, whom he also named apostles, to be with him, and to be sent out to proclaim the gospel.

We give thanks for all your followers and servants in every age. We remember this week David of Wales, and all those whose year’s mind occurs this month. Hold in your hands the dying, and comfort those who are mourning loved ones.

And he appointed twelve, whom he also named apostles, to be with him, and to be sent out to proclaim the gospel.

We pray for our world. Help us to cherish the beauty of our earth and the resources which sustain our lives, our health. Turn us from greed and needless waste.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

We pray for all people, those close to us and those far away and very different from us. We pray for the people of Syria and Turkei and New Zealand, for lives lost, homes destroyed and children traumatised. We pray for healing for those suffering illness and frailty. We pray for those who are homeless or have no employment, who are feeling marginalised from society. We pray especially for ….. and for those known to us whom we name aloud or in the silence of our hearts…

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Lord God, we thank you for all the gifts you give us and we pray your blessing on us as we go forth into the world this week. And grant that what we have asked in faith, we may by your grace, receive. Amen.

March Retiring Collection: ABM’s Lenten Appeal

Your gift this Lent and Good Friday will help support vulnerable women, youth and children in the Diocese of Jerusalem. It will empower many vulnerable women in Gaza and improve the nutrition of their children, via the courageous work of the Ahli Hospital. It will also help to ensure that young Anglican Palestinians learn more about their Christian heritage, including visiting ancient Christian sites such as the synagogue church where Jesus read the scroll of Isaiah. These young people will also be provided with the skills needed to lead their communities and churches into the future.
