Sentence for the Day

The Lord is near to all who call on him in truth. He fulfils the desire of all that fear him, hears their cry, and saves them. Psalm 145.18–19

Collect of the Day

O God,giver of life and health,

whose Son Jesus Christ has called us to hunger and thirst for justice:

refresh us with your grace,

that we may not be weary in well-doing,

for the sake of him who meets all our needs,

Jesus Christ our Saviour;

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Liturgy:  via PowerPoint + APBA   Colour – Green

Readings:

Genesis 32.22-31; Psalm 17.1-7,16; Romans 9.1-8; Matthew 14.13-21

We acknowledge and pay our respects to the Wanggeriburra people of the Yugambeh Nation, the traditional owners and ongoing custodians of the land on which we gather, and to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people worshipping with us today.

A note from Helen

On a lonely night, after sending his family away, Jacob is confronted by a stranger and they ‘wrestle’ with each other for till daybreak.   Does this sound familiar to you, have you spent time alone in dark places and in that dark place found yourself ‘wrestling’ with something you won’t recognise as God until much, much later.  Whether we recognise our ‘nemesis’ as God or not, it is always in God’s company that we face our demons, and it is in God company that we fight the fights that will bend, break and remake us.  It is God who will bring us to the edge of our strength so that we finally surrender and allow ourselves to be saved.  God battles with and against us for our transformation.  The Hebrew word for wrestle means ‘to get dusty’, and it is when we ‘get down and get dirty’ that we find our true selves, our true strengths, and we face the reality of ourselves.  Jacob declines the ‘man’s’ request for release asking him to first bless him, but first asks for his name.  Are we asked that same question?  Not because God does not know who we are, but sometimes because we don’t.  Or maybe we don’t want to face what we know.  Who am I really.  So don’t despair about your times of ‘struggle’, wrestling means I haven’t walked away from God and God hasn’t walked away from me, and through the wrestling, blessing will come.

NOTICES

Thank you

Thank you for your presence yesterday at my commissioning.  It was lovely to be welcomed so openly and so enthusiastically and your hospitality was appreciated by all who were there.

Gwen Curtis turns 100 and you are invited to join her for that celebration August 12 from 10am in the Georgian Room.  Please share the news with all you know who know Gwen, as she will be here from her new residence down the mountain and it would be a great opportunity to share in this momentous occasion with her.

Intercessions – prepared by Peta

Creator God, we thank you for the wonderful Earth on which we live, and its landscapes and creatures. We thank you for the beauty of our mountain and valley homes. We bring before you our concerns about our planet and its future. Help each of us to play our part in living sustainably and in ensuring all peoples are able to share in the bounty of the earth.

Wondrously show your steadfast love,

O saviour of those who seek refuge from their adversaries at your right hand.

Living God, we try to live our lives as you commanded us, loving you and our neighbour as ourselves. But we are imperfect and often fail. Forgive us when we falter. Bless this church and all who minister and labour here in your name. Bless Helen, Bishop John, Bishop Administrator Cameron, Dan our Area Dean, and school chaplains Jodie and Nadine.

Wondrously show your steadfast love,

O saviour of those who seek refuge from their adversaries at your right hand.

Compassionate God, we bring before you all who suffer, those who are seriously ill, frail or dying, those living in poverty or who are homeless, all those who need our prayers. We pray especially for…. and for those known to us whom we name aloud or in the silence of our hearts.

Wondrously show your steadfast love,

O saviour of those who seek refuge from their adversaries at your right hand.

Eternal God, you knew each of us before we were born, and we are comforted to know you have prepared a place for us with you when our time on Earth comes to an end. Be with those who are dying and with those who are mourning. We pray for the families of the airmen killed off Hamilton Island this week. We remember with love those whose Years Mind occurs this month.

Wondrously show your steadfast love,

O saviour of those who seek refuge from their adversaries at your right hand and grant that what we have asked for in faith, we may by your grace, receive.
